Lenovo and Razer to build new range of gaming PCs

China based PC manufacturer, Lenovo has partnered with Razer, a company best know for its gaming peripherals, to launch co-branded Y series of gaming PCs. The first product will be the Razer Edition of Lenovo Y series gaming desktop and will be unveiled at CES In Las Vegas in January 2016.

Lenovo's Y series of gaming PCs was first unveiled at IFA trade show. Currently Lenovo offers two Y series desktop- Y700 and Y900, as well as six gaming laptops and some accessories.

As part of the partnership with Razer, Lenovo is will manufacture the innards of the computer an rely on Razer for aesthetics and likely gaming peripherals. The company could also make use of Razer's software expertise as seen in tools such as Synapse, a cloud based driver software and Cortex that is used in optimising game settings.

The first prototype of the gaming PC was showcased last week at DreamHack Winter 2015 event in Sweden. The prototype features a pair of NVIDIA GeForce GTX graphics cards in an SLI configuration and Razer Chroma case lighting, and green USB ports. Not much is known about the product, but an image shows a Y series tower case sporting Razer's green glow, along with its customisable 'Chroma' lighting at the base.

This is not the first time a major PC maker has partnered with gaming hardware company. There have also been major acquisitions in the space. In 2006, HP acquireVoodoo PC and Dell bought Alienware. While Dell still uses Alienware's brand power to sell several gaming laptops, HP appears to have abandoned Voodoo, with no new product released since 2011.
