Exclusive: Nougat 7.1 Will Come In December This Year

Just in case you were wondering whether or not your Nexus device will be getting updated to Nougat 7.1 and when will the update land, don't worry, the information we have got from our Google insiders you has got you all covered up.

Google had said in it's event on October 4 that Nougat 7.1 (which is currently exclusive to the Pixel phones) would be rolled out to the existing pool of Nexus devices and the Pixel C before the end of this year. Just as we had told you a month back in another leak, Nougat 7.1 would be preceded with multiple developer previews as well. No timeline of events has been stated by Google though.

Our friends over from Google have told us that developer previews for Nougat 7.1, which is the first maintenance release of Nougat, would be beginning by November or last week of October. Currently Google plans to get in at least three beta builds of Nougat 7.1, before rolling out the update to the devices in it's eligible cadre by Christmas this year. At the same time the source code for Nougat 7.1 has been made available to other device manufacturers and Google has requested them to start working on adapting it to their UI skins and modify it in the way they want to. Google has also requested the OEMs to start rolling out beta builds of the same and test Nougat 7.1 on their flagship products launched in 2015 or early this year.

Yep, Google wants to enlighten the Christmassy feeling further by wishing you Merry Christmas with an Android update.

As a courtesy, or moreover an apology, to the Nexus 6 & Nexus 9 users for the delay in Nougat 7.0 update by over a month, Google will be sending out the Nougat 7.1 update to these devices as well. The minimum support period ends for both the Nexus 6 & 9 with the end of this month. Thus, Nexus 6 & Nexus 9 will be getting the Nougat 7.1 update outside their minimum support period.

Now, we had reported earlier that both the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 would be getting updated to Nougat with the release of Android 7.1 this year. However, these two devices got Nougat 7.0 with the October and September security patch respectively. We are told here that in order to keep "the market savvy of the Pixel phones", the release of Nougat 7.1 was "postponed" to December.
