Nextbit Has Been Acquired By Razer, Phone Production Ceased

We never saw this coming. Nextbit, the maker of cloud-first Robin smartphone, has announced that it has been acquired by gaming PC and peripheral maker Razer.

As a result of the acquisition, Nextbit will stop selling the Robin phone and all accessories through its official channels, but it will continue to fulfill warranties for six more months. As far as software is concerned, Nextbit will provide updates and security patches through February 2018.

This doesn't mean that Nextbit is fading away. The company in a press release said that it will operate as a standalone business inside Razer and focus on bringing unique mobile design and experiences. The deal was closed on January 27, 2017, but the financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

San-Fransico based Nextbit was founded in September 2015, by former members of Google's Android team and former head of design of HTC. The company has so far released only one smartphone called the Robin via Kickstarter crowdfunding and was a huge success.

The unique feature of Robin is that the phone ships with 100GB of cloud storage, what the company calls "Smart Storage". The phone also has an intelligent system using which it will automatically back up less frequently used media contents (like photos, videos) and apps. Nextbit's Smart Storage can also restore any backed up media content or application whenever the user needs access to it. The 'rebellious' Robin also boasted impressive specs at budget like 5.2-inch Full HD display, Snapdragon 808 chip, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, 13MP/5MP cameras, USB Type-C, 4G LTE and 2680mAh battery

As for the Razer, the company apart from gaming PCs, has already launched a tablet called Edge Pro  back in 2013. With the acquisition of Nextbit, will we see Razer foray into the smartphone market? Only time will tell.
