Dirty Unicorns 11.1 Is Coming This Friday, Bids Adieu To SuperSU, Chromium
Dirty Unicorns (DU) have announced that they will be releasing the next iteration of their Nougat based DU 11 the coming Friday. DU 11.1 will be introducing several changes which the team fears "may not be that popular" but were necessary for the project. This build of the ROM will also bring the February security patch along with it.
DU have also decided to give up on SuperSU and Chromium. Chromium is an open source alternative of Google Chrome. Although Chrome draws it's source code from Chromium only, custom ROMs prefer to include Chromium because it is open source and can be used by anyone. In fact some custom ROMs further go ahead and even modify Chromium's code to include more features in it. The web browser in Paranoid Android was a great example of this.
Talking about the exclusion of Chromium, DU wrote:
You will also notice that we removed Chromium. While no announcement was made for that, we felt that it too was necessary due to Google breaking the syncing option in it and in a lot of ways forcing people to use Chrome. We hate that it had to be done but shipping with that browser was causing more headaches for us than anything else. In the state it was in, it was just janky. We can't come up with another word, it was janky. It didn't live up to our standards.
Although Chromium might be back in a future release, DU have made it clear that they "have no intentions of bringing it (SuperSU) back or even replacing it with another root management app." If you are wondering what will happen to DU's support for Substratum (since Substratum needs root access too), then you have to get it clear that DU does not ship with Substratum, it only provides support for the theme engine, so that if someone ever wishes to use the services of Substratum they can use it. However if you plan to use Substratum, then you will have to flash SuperSU or any root management tool of your choice.
