LG G6 officially announced
After weeks of leaks from both unverified sources and LG themselves the LG G6 was finally officially announced on stage at the MWC 2017 event in Barcelona. Qualcomm leaked the device hours before the official announcement in fact, but that is not the first time Qualcomm has done that. The highlight of the device is its tall 5.7 inch QuadHD+ display with a new 18:9 aspect ratio. The phone is small for a device with that big a display thanks to the minimum bezels and the company claims that the LG G6 only has a footprint of a 5.2 inch device. The new LG G6 display also supports two wider color standards: Dolby Vision and HDR 10.
This provides for brighter brights and better colors and detail on compatible content. The company assures that they have worked with developers to ensure apps and services are compatible with the taller 18:9 display and mentioned Amazon Prime Video specifically. However most 16:9 videos will not fill up the entire screen. The company also took some time to explain why they do not believe in curved displays, because they're more tiresome to handle and prone to shattering easier.
It is water and dust proof and stands with IP 68 certification so you don't have to worry now when you're out and it rains.
LG's best is packed with Snapdragon 821 processor with 6GB of RAM. There are two variants of the device one with 64GB of storage and other with 128GB. It includes a decent 3300 mAh battery and supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. All of that is covered in a glass and metal body not seen on an LG phone since the Optimus G. The LG G6 doesn't try hard to be different with modularity or anything like the G5, instead it goes for a different route. A more simplistic approach all around. The device does not even necessarily has every single latest spec, like the Snapdragon 821 instead of the 835.Yet, the Snapdragon 821 is no slouch.
The rear of the device houses a dual camera setup much like the G5, dual LED flash and a fingerprint sensor. Both the camera sensors are 13 mega pixel and are covered by a wide angle lens with a whopping 125 degree field of view, wider than the human field of view and f2.4 aperture. Even the front facing selfie camera has a 100 degree wide angle lens. The camera software provides several collage options, including a neat mode which allows you to overlay an old photo on the view finder to match composition, along with the other details previously explained by the company.
The G6 also has the new UX 6.0 which takes advantage of the 18:9 aspect ratio, meaning more information will be visible on the screen at once. The icons too have rounded edges around the corner much like the display itself. Nothing new there however. The device runs on Android 7.0 Nougat with all its bells and whistles included, meaning you can run two apps simultaneously and it should be more fun on the taller than usual display.
Last year, LG V20 was the first device to ship with Android Nougat out of the box and it seems LG has earned a place on the good side of Google. As was rumoured, the LG G6 also comes with the Google Assistant baked right into it, which has been a Google Pixel exclusive until now (well... officially).
