A new patent application from Samsung shows us an alien device with a flexible display.

Samsung has its hands full at the moment with the Galaxy S8 just launching, the Note 7 refurbishing, and the Note 8 potentially a few months around the corner, but it doesn’t mean that the company doesn’t have more projects on the back burner. We can expect the concept of flexible and foldable displays to finally solidify in the somewhat near future, with Samsung at the forefront. The company has been filing patents for the technology left and right, and a new patent application submitted by the Korean tech giant suggests a possible application of flexible display technology in a device that looks... well alien.
This report comes from Patently Mobile, and it shows us a device that we can’t actually pin a singular label on. It’ll have a cylindrical body which houses the key components. Accessing these components will require you pulling up the cap, which will reveal the flexible display. So Samsung is planning on making displays that can be rolled up like paper in order to save space. The cap (numbers 720 and 720s) will house a few key features: as you can see, there’s a projector for a virtual keyboard, also, there’s also going to be a 3D camera. Patently mobile kindly asks users to you only one picture, but other images in the application shows that the cap will rotate in order to capture the 3D image. It’s also believed that this may be used for VR purposes, meaning that the image can be transmitted to a Gear VR set. While using the camera, one may be able to use the flexible display as a view finder, but the camera might also be able to be used even while the display is wrapped up and inside the housing. As for other potential features, there may even be a secondary display method where information can be displayed outside of the cylindrical housing.
As smartphone innovation grows more and more stagnant, seeing concepts like these give us confidence that there will always be new and creative ways of creating devices. This concept, while rather odd, is a potential step forward for mobile technology.
