Windows 10 S - The OS for students

Microsoft has introduced a more thinner OS called the Windows 10 S, it’s aimed towards students who want to get “cheaper” laptops with a OS that’s less taxing. Devices with Windows 10 S will be rolling out starting at $189 and it comes with a free one year subscription of Minecraft : Education Edition and all schools with genuine Windows 10 Pro PCs can get the Windows S for free. It also includes a free subscription of Office 365 which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and now Microsoft Teams, plus additional classroom tools.

The thing new about Minecraft: Education Edition is that it comes with a code builder that is like an extension to the normal Minecraft app which lets you use code from different languages an incorporates it into the game itself and can use commands from Scratch, Tynker and also Javascript.

Microsoft Teams is a new chat based workspace for students and teachers which lets you create stuff in the application itself and lets other students in your team or your teacher to review what the students are up to. It also helps students who have missed a few days to have an overview of what has happened by reading the chats and various study material given by the teacher. It has rich scheduling features, plus ad-hoc 1-1 and group calling.

Paint 3D is an app which lets you create models in 3D and integrate it into your PowerPoint with ease.

Although applications for a device with Windows 10 S cannot be downloaded from anywhere but the Windows Store, you can still upgrade the device to Windows 10 Pro if you need it.

It is still too early to judge how this will go but it does have some cool features but the laptops should also have better prices for the specs they provide and how much does it really help the classrooms.
