The Sharp Aquos S2 Is Finally Announced With Minimum Bezels

A trend in smartphone technology that's been picking up steam is minimal bezels. Starting with the LG G6 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 duo, more and more OEM's are taking a shrink ray to the bezels on their phones and squeezing in more screen real estate. Another OEM that's jumping on the train is not one we associate much with smartphones. Sharp, the Japanese company more known for producing televisions, has just announced it's Sharp Aquos S2 handset. The main feature of this phone is an amazing screen-to-body ratio achieved by its "Tri-Bezel' display. Previous pictures and renders we saw of this device painted a pretty (yet inaccurate) picture of what this phone's going to look like. They showed us a phone that was literally nothing but display. A slew of more accurate pictures of the phone popped up, showing us a phone that's a bit more down-to-earth.

The name "Tri-Bezel" is made evident by the fact that three out of the four sides of the 5.5 inch display extend to the absolute edge of the phone. Much like the iPhone 8 and the Essential PH-1, the font facing camera cuts out a small chunk of the display up top. The only place we see bezel is at the bottom, which houses the fingerprint scanner. Even though the Aquos S2 isn't truly bezeless, it still has an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 87.5%, besting the likes of Samsung and LG. One area where those two companies have the Aquos S2 beat is in resolution. This phone is sporting a display with a resolution of 2040 x 1080. So, it's not the sharpest, but it gets the job done.

The phone will come in two variants. The specs on the less powerful variant will be an octa core Snapdragon 630 SoC with the Adreno 508 GPU, accompanied by 4 GB's of RAM and 64 GB's of storage. The more powerful version will be using the Snapdragon 660 SoC with the Adreno 512 GPU, accompanied by 6 GB's of RAM, and 128 GB's of internal storage. Both versions will have a dual camera setup. One sensor will be 12-megapixels with an 8 megapixel secondary sensor, both at f/1.8 aperture. The front facing camera will be 8-megapixels at f/2.0 aperture. Keeping the lights on is a 3020 mAh battery. And, yes, it will have a headphone jack.

If it's one thing that this phone has going for it, it's the display. While not the sharpest, it's still going to be good enough. The main story is in the minimal bezels. With its specs, it'll definitely be in the mid-range market, meaning the Aquos S2, with its "Tri-Bezel" display, has a chance to be the first minimal bezel phone in the budget market. Bringing a stunning looking display like that at a lower price point just may give Sharp the edge.
