OnePlus 5 To Get Facial Recognition Soon

OnePlus just started rolling out Oreo 8.0 to the OnePlus 5. If that wasn't enough for a Christmas present, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has promised that the OnePlus 5 will be getting the face unlock feature in a future update.

OnePlus started marketing face unlock as a feature with their recent flagship the OnePlus 5T. Although Android has had facial recognition since the days of Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0), it is only now that a company is using face unlock for marketing purposes. If you haven't got it yet, OnePlus is marketing the 5T's facial unlock to put it against the iPhone X. OnePlus' USP has always been to bring features of flagship devices at lower costs. The iPhone X ditched TouchID in favour of facial recognition. The iPhone X also costs more than double the OnePlus 5T. By touting the OnePlus 5T's face unlock against that of the iPhone's, OnePlus is only further emphasising on its selling point.

To its credit, OnePlus has improved a lot upon the face unlock we first saw in Android 4.0. Various reviewers who used the OnePlus 5T found the face unlock to be astoundingly fast. If you are wondering about the reliability of face unlock, OnePlus says that the feature is nowhere safe enough to facilitate secure operations like making payments. As a side note though, several YouTubers tried to fool the 5T's face unlock with photographs and makeup. There attempts, however, went in vain.
