Apple patent hints at higher-quality speakers in future iPhones

Apple is expected to ditch the 3.5mm audio jack headphone port in favor of their own lightning port in an attempt to make the next iPhone slimmer by up to 1mm. Now a new rumor suggests that Apple is planning to improve the quality of the speaker in the future iPhones.

According to a patent filed by Apple, the company is looking at ways to boost audio for the iPhone 7 to offer improved sound output. The patent points to a revamped speaker design that makes use of an audio chamber inside the device for better sound out put.

To achieve this, Apple will have to change the internal circuitry and design, to create more space to improve the amount of air that can pass through the speaker system, so that the entire space can act as an audio chamber resulting in better sound output as well as audio quality. Apple would also use a similar technique to improve the quality of microphone.

The patent reads, “As portable electronic devices get smaller and thinner, there are increased difficulties in providing the same or greater functionality in a smaller area. The one or more speakers of the system can produce audio sound that can be directed to one or more audio output openings.”

The patent titled "Audio port configuration for compact electronic devices" was applied in 2013, and Apple was recently awarded the patent.
