Samsung starts mass producing its new 14nm Exynos 7 Dual 7270 SoC for wearables


Samsung has announced that it has started mass production of Exynos 7 Dual 7270, a new chip for wearables. The chip is the first mobile application processor built on 14nm FinFET process, the same used for Exynos 7420 smartphone SoC, which powers international version of Galaxy S6, S6 edge and Galaxy Note5. 

The Exynos 7270 chip integrates two ARM Cortex A53 cores, which are designed to balance performance and power efficiency. They will make full use of 14nm process to deliver 20 percent improvement in power efficiency over its predecessor built on 28nm, and extending battery life.

The chip will also integrate an LTE Cat.4 modem, which will allow wearables using Exynos 7270 to transfer data over carrier networks as a standalone device instead of pairing with smartphones. The chip will also integrate WiFi, Bluetooth and FM radios, completing the essential communications package.

Furthermore, the Exynos 7270 will use Samsung's "innovative packaging technology, SiP(system-in-package)-ePoP(embedded package-on-package)" to integrate the CPU, radios, DRAM and NAND flash memory chips into a single package. This solution will save up 30 percent of the total height, which will help wearable makers to design high performance, ultra-slim wearable devices without compromising power or power efficiency.

Samsung said that a reference platform comprised of the Exynos 7270, NFC and various sensors is currently available for device manufacturers. It's worth mentioning that Samsung's latest smartwatch the Gear S3 uses an Exynos 7270 processor.
