Lenovo will reportedly use Moto branding in all future smartphones

Back in 2014, Lenovo acquired Motorola's smartphone business from Google. Since Lenovo already manufacture their own smartphones (PHAB, Vibe, ZUK), the acquisition of Motorola adds an arsenal of smartphones to Lenovo's portfolio. Now in 2016, Lenovo plans to make most out of the Moto brand.

According to a report coming out of China, Lenovo will no longer market smartphone under its brand name, instead use Moto brand for all future smartphones, leaving the Lenovo brand where it's strength lies — PCs & laptop.

The news comes after Lenovo's disappointing financial results for the second fiscal quarter of 2016, where it earned $2 billion in smartphone sales, which is down 12 per cent YoY. However, Lenovo saw modest 20% increase quarter-to-quarter, thanks to the PC and laptop business, which makes up to 70 percent of company's revenue every year.

Apart from this, Lenovo is also changing the leadership of its smartphone business (involving replacement of current Co-President and SVP of the company's Mobile Business Group Xudong Chen with Gina Qiao, formerly SVP of Human Resource) and has hired three new executives from Intel, Alcatel-Lucent, and Microsoft in home market of China.

With these changes Lenovo hopes that it will gradually transform from a hardware company to a customer-oriented company with focus on devices with AI and cloud services.

Moreover Lenovo yesterday launched its latest mid-range Moto M smartphone in China. However, there's no word what will happen to Lenovo's subsidiary mobile brands, for instance ZUK.
