Samsung recalls 2.8 Million top-load washing machines in the U.S

The year 2016 started good for Samsung, as the South Korean tech giant received all the praise for its GalaxyS7/Galaxy S7 edge in the first half of the year. But now the year is turning out to be forgetful one for the company, as it has been in the headlines due to faulty products.

It all started with the Galaxy Note7 fiasco, which led to the phone being recalled and discontinued permanently, the reason being due to catching fire. Now the company has been forced to recall 2.8 million of its top-load washing machines due to safety issues.

According to the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC), Samsung is recalling 34 models of Samsung top-load washing machines in the U.S (units sold at Best Buy, The Home Depot, Lowes, Sears and other home appliance stores from March 2011 to November 2016 for between $450 and $1,500).

This is because "the washing machine top can unexpectedly detach from the washing machine chassis during use, posing a risk of injury from impact."

CSPC said that Samsung has received 733 reports of washing machines experiencing excessive vibration or the top detaching from the washing machine chassis. There have been nine reported injuries so far, including a broken jaw, injured shoulder, and other impact or fall-related injuries.

Samsung is giving customers following options for the recall program:
  1. a free in-home repair that includes reinforcement of the washer's top +  one-year extension of the manufacturer’s warranty, regardless of the age of their washer.
  2. a rebate to be applied towards the purchase of a new Samsung or other brand washing machine, along with free installation of the new unit and removal of old unit;
  3. a full refund for consumers who purchased their washing machine within the past 30 days of the recall announcement.
