WhatsApp Beta for Android and Windows Phone gets two-step verification

WhatsApp has added two-step verification features that adds more security for its Android and Windows Phone beta app. With the two-step verification enabled, a user will have to enter six-digit pass code when setting up the account on their device, while verifying phone number.

To enable the two-step verification, go to Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Enable.

When enabling two-step verification, users will also get the option to add their email address to add more protection. Linking email to WhatsApp, will ensure user of some way of getting their account back in case they forget the passcode, by getting a reset link.

However WhatsApp says that it will not verify the email address to confirm accuracy, so it is recommended to provide the correct email address, so that you're not locked out of your account if you forget the passcode.

WhatsApp also cautions that with two-step verification enabled, users will not be able to re-verify their account within seven days of last using the app without the passcode. The same applies, if a user has forgotten his/her passcode, and hasn't provided an email to receive the two-step verification disable link. After seven days, the user will be able to verify their account without a pass code, but all pending messages will be deleted upon re-verifying.

“If your number is re-verified on WhatsApp after 30 days of last using WhatsApp, and without your pass code, your account will be deleted and a new one will be created upon successfully re-verifying,” WhatsApp added.
