Apple joins Wireless Power Consortium, next iPhone most likely to support wireless charging

Rumors in the past have suggested that Apple's next iPhones will feature wireless charging capabilities. Now the Cupertino tech giant has joined the Wireless Power Consortium, an industry group of 213 manufacturers that includes the likes of Samsung, HTC, Qualcomm, Nokia, Sony, Huawei to name a few.

The group develops and oversees wireless charging standard called Qi. While Samsung, Apple's biggest rival had wirelss charging in its premium smartphone offering, the iPhone lacked this feature.

This is by far the biggest evidence that the next gen iPhone (all or at least one model) will support wireless charging and further strengthens previous rumors.

"Apple is joining the Wireless Power Consortium to be able to participate and contribute ideas to the open, collaborative development of future wireless charging standards", Apple said to Business Insider

Apple already offer wireless charging through the Apple Watch. Moreover, some third-party cases supporting wireless charging, lets iPhone users charge their device wirelessly.
