Kernel Sources For Mi A2 & Galaxy Note 9 (Exynos) Released

After drawing criticism for the slow release of kernel sources, Xiaomi promised to mend its ways and said that it will release kernel source code for newer devices within three months of launch. Xiaomi's second generation of Android One phones, the Mi A2 and the Mi A2 Lite, were released last month, and the Chinese company has now released the Oreo-based kernel source code for the former device.

To pull out the kernel sources for the Note9, search for "n96" on Samsung's Opensource Release Center

Unlike Xiaomi, Samsung has been fairly quick to post the kernel sources for its devices. The Galaxy Note 9 is only two weeks old, and Samsung has already uploaded the kernel sources for its latest flagship. The kernel sources are pivotal for the development of stable custom ROMs. Additionally, kernel source codes are also used by developers while building custom recoveries and third-party kernels.

The kernel source code for both Xiaomi and Samsung phones can be found in the source. Xiaomi's phones have always received great support from developers. At the time of writing this article, the XDA forums for the Mi A2 were quite active. A modified version of TWRP was available, and there was a discussion thread about the Google Camera mod. For the Galaxy Note 9 (Exynos), a test build of TWRP was available. The Snapdragon variants of the Galaxy Note 9 ship only in China and US. Unfortunately, Samsung doesn't provide an official method to unlock the bootloader of the Snapdragon variants. The development for the Snapdragon variants is, therefore, mostly restricted.
