Disney Hires Former Character.AI CEO as First-Ever CTO After Copyright Clash

Disney Hires Former Character.AI CEO as First-Ever CTO After Copyright Clash

TL;DR

  • Disney has named former Character.AI CEO Noam Shazeer as its first-ever Chief Technology Officer, reporting directly to CEO Bob Iger starting this fall.
  • The hire is a stunning reversal after Disney sent Character.AI a cease-and-desist letter in late 2024 over AI chatbots mimicking Elsa, Moana, Darth Vader and other copyrighted characters.
  • The move signals Disney is shifting from fighting generative AI in court to aggressively building it into films, parks, Disney+, and a new conversational character platform.

From Legal Foe to Tech Chief

In a move almost no one in Hollywood or Silicon Valley saw coming, Disney has tapped the former head of one of its biggest AI adversaries to lead its technological future.

Disney confirmed on September 17, 2026 that Noam Shazeer, the AI pioneer and former CEO of Character.AI, will become the company's first-ever Chief Technology Officer. Shazeer, a former Google Brain leader and co-inventor of the Transformer architecture that powers modern AI, will oversee all AI, data, and emerging technology initiatives across Disney Entertainment, ESPN, and Experiences.

He will report directly to CEO Bob Iger and work closely with the newly formed Office of Technology Enablement. In a staff memo, Iger called Shazeer a once-in-a-generation technologist who will help ensure Disney is not just adapting to the AI era, but defining it.

The hire is historic for Disney. In its 100-plus-year history, the company has never had a company-wide CTO, preferring to keep technology siloed within studios, Imagineering, and streaming. That changes now.

From Cease-and-Desist to C-Suite

What makes the appointment so surprising is the bitter history between the two companies just months ago.

In December 2024, Disney sent a formal cease-and-desist letter to Character.AI, accusing the startup of facilitating massive copyright infringement. The letter alleged that users could create and chat with unauthorized bots impersonating characters like Elsa from Frozen, Moana, Iron Man, Darth Vader, and even Walt Disney himself, complete with likenesses, voices, and personalities lifted straight from Disney IP.

Disney's legal team argued the platform was profiting from its characters without permission and demanded immediate takedowns and stronger filters. Character.AI at the time said it was implementing stricter likeness protections and character moderation, but did not fully remove Disney-inspired bots.

The clash mirrored Disney's broader crackdown on generative AI. In June 2025, Disney and Universal jointly sued image generator Midjourney for churning out unauthorized images of Minions, Shrek, Buzz Lightyear and Darth Vader, calling it a bottomless pit of plagiarism. That lawsuit is still pending.

Now Disney has hired the very executive who built the platform it threatened to sue.

Why Disney Made the Hire

According to people familiar with the decision, talks began quietly this summer after Shazeer stepped back from his return stint at Google. Iger and Disney Entertainment co-chairmen Alan Bergman and Dana Walden were reportedly convinced Disney needed centralized, founder-level AI leadership to compete with Netflix, YouTube, OpenAI and Google.

Three factors drove the decision:

First, credibility and talent. Shazeer co-authored the landmark 2017 Attention Is All You Need paper and led LaMDA at Google before co-founding Character.AI in 2021. Character.AI quickly became one of the most-used consumer AI apps in the world, famous for letting millions of users role-play with custom chatbots. Disney wants that expertise in conversational AI, personalization, and AI safety.

Second, peacemaking. By bringing Shazeer in-house, Disney effectively turns a legal headache into an asset. Insiders say part of the agreement includes deeper IP guardrails and a potential licensing framework that could resolve the outstanding Character.AI dispute without further litigation.

Third, speed. Disney is racing to deploy generative AI across script visualization, animation workflows, localization and dubbing, sports highlights for ESPN, and personalized kids experiences on Disney+. It needed a single leader to unify efforts currently scattered across Studios, Imagineering, and its streaming tech teams.

What This Signals for Disney's Future AI Strategy

The appointment makes clear Disney's AI strategy is no longer just defensive. It is offensive.

Rather than simply suing AI startups, Disney now wants to build with them - but on its own terms, with licensed IP and creator protections. Iger has repeatedly said Disney must embrace AI responsibly, with compensation and consent for creators.

Expect three big pushes under Shazeer:

Hollywood production tools that cut costs without replacing artists, including AI-assisted storyboarding, background generation, and de-aging and voice tools already tested by Industrial Light & Magic.

Interactive characters and parks, including conversational Mickey Mouse, Star Wars droids, and Marvel heroes for Disney+ chat experiences, Disneyland robots, and a family-safe AI companion that Disney has been prototyping internally.

A unified Disney AI platform that powers recommendations, automated dubbing in 30+ languages, live sports recaps, and user-generated play experiences - all walled off from unauthorized scraping of Disney IP.

For an industry still nervous about AI replacing writers, animators and actors, hiring the man behind Character.AI will be controversial. But for Disney, the message is clear: if AI is going to impersonate Mickey, it would rather own the technology doing it.
