Google Brings Flipkart Shopping to Gemini and AI Mode in India

Google Brings Flipkart Shopping to Gemini and AI Mode in India

TL;DR

  • Google has started a limited test in India letting select users browse and buy Flipkart products directly inside Gemini and AI Mode in Search without switching apps.
  • The early test covers electronics, fashion, home essentials and more, with Flipkart-powered checkout, UPI support, and order tracking built into the chat.
  • A broader rollout is expected later in October, with more categories, sellers, and agentic checkout features on the way.

How The Test Works

Google is quietly turning its AI assistants into shopping assistants for India. For a small group of users, asking Gemini or AI Mode in Search for product recommendations now surfaces Flipkart listings that can be purchased without ever leaving the conversation.

Instead of getting a list of blue links, test users see shoppable product cards with live pricing, ratings, delivery timelines, and a Buy Now option. Tapping through opens a Flipkart-powered mini checkout inside Gemini or Search, where you can select size or variant, confirm your delivery address, and pay via UPI, cards, or cash on delivery.

The idea is to collapse the entire journey - discovery, comparison, and purchase - into one prompt. You can ask something like "find a noise-cancelling earbuds under Rs 3,000 for gym" and then refine by brand, follow up about warranty, and check out, all in the same thread.

Who Gets Access Right Now

As with most Google commerce experiments, this is a server-side limited test. Only select users in India on Android and iOS with the latest Google app and Gemini app are seeing the Flipkart integration.

No waitlist or Labs opt-in has been announced yet. If you are included, AI Mode answers and select Gemini responses will automatically show a Flipkart badge and in-chat checkout. Google is reportedly using the test to fine-tune language support, including Hinglish queries and Hindi prompts, before the wider launch.

What You Can Buy

The initial catalog is intentionally focused on high-intent categories where Flipkart is strongest. Eligible products currently include smartphones and accessories, laptops and audio gear, fashion and footwear, beauty picks, and home and kitchen essentials.

Listings appear to be limited to Flipkart-assured sellers with reliable ratings and return policies. Grocery, large appliances, and travel bookings are not part of the test yet, though they are expected to be strong candidates for the October expansion.

Google says results are ranked by relevance, price, ratings, and delivery speed, not as paid placements. Product cards pull real-time inventory and offers from Flipkart, including Big Billion Days-style deals, exchange offers, and EMI options.

Why Flipkart, Why India

The partnership makes strategic sense on both sides. India is Google's largest user base for Gemini and one of the fastest-growing markets for AI Mode in Search. It is also a mobile-first shopping market where conversational commerce and UPI have already changed buying habits.

For Flipkart, embedding checkout directly into Google's AI surfaces puts it in front of high-intent shoppers at the exact moment of decision, countering competition from Amazon India, Meesho, and quick-commerce apps. For Google, it is a crucial step toward agentic commerce - turning AI answers into transactions without losing users to other apps.

This follows Google's broader push to make Search and Gemini shoppable globally, including Shopify integrations in the US and virtual try-on tools, but India is the first market to get a deep, native checkout integration with a homegrown marketplace.

What To Expect From The October Rollout

The broader rollout planned for later in October is expected to open access to far more users across Android, iOS, and mobile web. Expect expanded categories, deeper Flipkart integration like order tracking, cancellations, returns status, and price-drop alerts directly in Gemini.

Google is also tipped to add agentic features such as automatic price comparison across sellers, coupon auto-apply, and reorder reminders. Longer term, support for voice shopping in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and other Indian languages, plus integration with Flipkart Plus loyalty benefits, is likely.

Privacy and payment security will be in focus. Google says Flipkart handles payment processing and fulfillment, while chat history and shopping preferences remain governed by existing Google account controls with an option to disconnect Flipkart at any time.

What It Means For The Future Of Shopping

If the test succeeds, searching may never feel the same in India. Instead of opening five tabs to compare phones or sneakers, users could simply chat, compare, and check out in seconds.

For retailers and brands, it signals a shift toward optimizing for AI answers rather than just search rankings. For shoppers, October could mark the moment AI assistants stop just recommending what to buy and start actually buying it for you.
