Meta Muse Hits No. 2 in US App Store Despite Slower Start Than Threads and Meta AI

TL;DR

  • Meta's standalone Muse AI app has surged to No. 2 on the US App Store in early September 2026, trailing only ChatGPT despite a much slower launch than Threads and Meta AI.
  • The late momentum is being fueled by viral AI-generated video from Meta Vibes, deep integration with Instagram and Ray-Ban Meta glasses, and a new hands-free voice agent upgrade.
  • The climb validates CEO Mark Zuckerberg's pivot to personal superintelligence and standalone AI apps after billions in spending on talent and infrastructure.

A Quiet Launch, Then a Sudden Surge

Meta Muse did not explode out of the gate. Unlike Threads, which hit 100 million sign-ups in five days in July 2023, or the Meta AI app, which shot to No. 1 almost immediately after its standalone launch in April 2025, Muse took weeks to find its footing.

App intelligence data shows Muse hovered outside the top 50 on the US iPhone App Store through most of August after its low-key rollout. It only cracked the top 10 in the first week of September before jumping to No. 2 on September 8-9, where it has now held for several days behind OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Analysts say the trajectory is more of a slow burn than a flop. Meta deliberately launched Muse as an experimental creative companion rather than giving it the full Instagram cross-promotion blitz that powered Threads and Meta AI. Downloads were initially driven by early testers and Ray-Ban Meta owners, not the broader 3-billion-user Meta family.

What's Fueling the Momentum

Three catalysts flipped the switch. The biggest is Vibes, Meta's feed of AI-generated short videos built into Muse and the Meta AI app. After Zuckerberg began reposting surreal AI clips and remixes from creators in late August, Vibes turned into a TikTok-like discovery engine for Muse, driving millions of curious first-time downloads over Labor Day weekend.

The second driver is hardware and hands-free voice. A major late-August update turned Muse into a true proactive agent that can see what you see via Ray-Ban Meta glasses, remember context across Instagram DMs and WhatsApp, and take actions like editing videos, booking reservations, and building shopping lists. Reviews highlighting the always-on voice mode and celebrity-inspired voices went viral on TikTok and Instagram Reels.

Third is distribution. Meta finally plugged Muse into its super-app funnel, adding one-tap entry points from Instagram's search bar, WhatsApp, and Facebook, plus prominent prompts to try Muse for photo editing and Reels creation. That cross-promotion mirrors the playbook that pushed Meta AI to over a billion monthly users.

Slower Than Threads and Meta AI — And That's the Point

On paper, Muse's early numbers still look modest next to its siblings. Threads added 30 million users overnight and remains Meta's fastest-ever launch. Meta AI benefited from instantly replacing the in-app assistant used by hundreds of millions, allowing it to top the App Store within 48 hours of going standalone.

Muse, by contrast, started as an opt-in, creator-focused agent with no existing chat history to port over. Sensor Tower and Appfigures estimates cited this week put its US downloads in the low single-digit millions so far — a fraction of what Meta AI did in its first week.

But Meta executives have framed that as intentional. Where Meta AI is the general-purpose assistant, Muse is positioned as a taste-making, agentic sidekick for creation — generating videos, restyling photos, and acting on your behalf. Slower, stickier growth among Gen Z creators is seen internally as more valuable than a one-day download spike.

What It Means for Meta's AI Strategy

The No. 2 ranking arrives at a critical moment for Meta. After restructuring its AI efforts into the Meta Superintelligence Labs unit, spending heavily to poach researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, and committing hundreds of billions to data centers, investors have been demanding proof that Meta can ship a hit consumer AI product beyond its social apps.

Muse's rise provides that proof point. It suggests Meta's two-track strategy is working: keep Meta AI as the mass-market assistant baked into every app and pair of glasses, while letting Muse experiment with agentic features, Vibes video generation, and personalization that can later be folded back into the core family.

The challenge now is retention. Threads showed that reaching No. 1 is easier than staying there, with usage falling sharply after its initial hype. For Muse to matter long-term, Meta will need to turn viral video curiosity into daily agent habits — and fend off ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, all of which still dominate mindshare for serious AI work.

For now, though, Meta has something it hasn't had in months: a clear App Store winner that isn't just riding Instagram's coattails, but building its own momentum.
