Qualcomm Launches New AI Smartphone Chips Capable of Running 30B Models Locally

TL;DR
- Qualcomm has launched two new mobile platforms at Snapdragon Summit 2026 — the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the sub-flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 — both built for on-device generative AI.
- The headline 8 Elite Gen 6 features a new Oryon CPU, upgraded Hexagon NPU, and support for running 30B-parameter mixture-of-experts models locally with agentic AI capabilities.
- The first phones powered by the new chips are expected in October 2026 from Xiaomi, OnePlus, iQOO, Honor, and Samsung, promising big gains for AI assistants, mobile gaming, and cameras.
A New Two-Tier Flagship Strategy
Qualcomm kicked off Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui with a familiar but important twist: instead of one flagship chip, it now has two. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 sits at the top as the full-power processor for 2027 ultra-premiums, while the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 brings most of the same AI and gaming architecture to more affordable flagship killers.
Both chips are built on TSMC's latest 2nm-class process and share Qualcomm's Hexagon NPU, Spectra ISP, and connectivity foundations. The difference comes down to CPU clocks, GPU cores, and peak AI throughput — Elite for maximum performance, Gen 5 for flagship performance at lower cost and power.
Meet The Flagship: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is Qualcomm's most ambitious phone chip to date. It debuts the third-generation Oryon CPU with a 2 + 6 core layout, clocking up to 4.6GHz on the prime cores, paired with a new Adreno GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading.
Qualcomm claims a 20% faster CPU, 25% faster GPU, and 30% lower power draw compared to last year's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It adds support for LPDDR6 memory up to 24GB, UFS 5.0 storage, Wi-Fi 8, X85 5G modem with satellite messaging, and console-class gaming with Unreal Engine 5 Nanite and Lumen support.
For creators, the 18-bit triple Spectra ISP enables 200MP photo capture, 8K HDR video, real-time AI semantic segmentation, and night vision video without the shutter lag seen on older phones.
30B On-Device: The Real Breakthrough
The biggest headline is AI. The upgraded Hexagon NPU delivers over 100 TOPS of INT4 performance and introduces a dedicated agentic AI engine with larger transformer acceleration and shared memory access to the CPU and GPU.
That allows the 8 Elite Gen 6 to run a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model entirely on-device, with around 8 billion active parameters at a time. In practice, that means phones can run models in the class of Llama 4 Scout, Qwen 3-30B, and DeepSeek-V3.2 style MoE variants locally, with token speeds Qualcomm pegs at 35+ tokens per second, all without cloud roundtrips.
Qualcomm is positioning this for personal superintelligence: long-context AI assistants that remember your emails, messages, calendar and photos, multi-step agents that can book, summarize, code and edit images offline, plus live translation, transcription, and generative photo and video editing with full privacy.
The second chip, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, isn't far behind. It uses the same NPU architecture with slightly lower clocks, still capable of running 7B to 13B dense models and smaller MoE models locally, bringing agentic AI to the $500-$700 segment for the first time.
What It Means For Mobile Gaming
AI isn't the only focus. Qualcomm is leaning hard into on-device gaming as the other killer app for this extra headroom.
The new Adreno Frame Motion Engine 3.0, Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, and improved ray tracing promise 144fps QHD+ gaming with lower latency and better thermal efficiency. Developers can use AI super-resolution and frame generation directly on the NPU, freeing the GPU for raw rendering.
Combined with the faster Oryon CPU, Qualcomm says next-gen Android phones will close the gap with handheld consoles and Apple’s A-series in sustained performance — a key pitch for titles like Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves, and AAA mobile ports.
What Comes Next: Next-Gen Android Phones
Qualcomm confirmed the first Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 phones will launch as early as October 2026. Xiaomi 16 and 16 Pro are expected first in China, followed by OnePlus 15, iQOO 15, Realme GT 8 Pro, Honor Magic 8, RedMagic 12, and Asus ROG Phone 10.
Samsung is also on board, with the Galaxy S26 Ultra and S26 series widely expected to use the 8 Elite Gen 6 for Galaxy globally in early 2027, with enhanced Galaxy AI features powered by the on-device 30B capability.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will power the next wave of value flagships, including successors to the Poco F-series, OnePlus R-series, and Motorola Edge lineup.
The Bigger Picture For Generative AI
Qualcomm's launch signals a major shift: the AI race on phones is moving from cloud copilots to fully local, private models. By proving a smartphone SoC can handle 30B MoE models — a workload that required a laptop or cloud server just a year ago — Qualcomm is betting that consumers will want AI that works on airplanes, protects personal data, and responds instantly.
If developers embrace the new Snapdragon AI Stack, QNN SDK, and support for Hugging Face and Ollama-style runtimes, 2027 Android phones could be the first to truly deliver offline ChatGPT-class assistants, real-time video generation, and autonomous agents in your pocket.
