Stoke Space is going big. The Kent, Washington-based launch startup confirmed it has completed the initial closing of a $1B Series E round, one of the largest private raises in spaceflight history, to push its first rocket to orbit and lay the groundwork for what comes after.

The company framed the round as an initial close, meaning the total Series E could grow further as additional investors join. Even as it stands, the financing more than doubles Stoke's total capital raised and vaults it into the top tier of venture-backed space companies globally, behind only SpaceX in the launch sector.

Stoke did not disclose a valuation for the new round, but the size and timing signal a major step-up from its previous $510 million Series D. The round was described as oversubscribed, drawing a mix of existing backers and new crossover and sovereign-linked funds eager for exposure to reusable launch.

Why This Round Matters Now

The timing is not accidental. Stoke is in the middle of the most capital-intensive phase of any rocket program: the transition from development and testing to flight, recovery, and re-flight.

The funds are earmarked for three core priorities: finishing qualification and flying Nova to orbit, industrializing production at its Kent headquarters and new Florida operations, and kicking off development of a new, larger rocket designed for higher-mass constellations, lunar logistics, and national security missions.

For a company pursuing full reusability from day one — not as a future upgrade — that manufacturing and operations ramp is critical. Unlike partially reusable systems, Stoke has to build, test, and recover two returnable stages, plus heat shields, propulsion, avionics, and ground systems to turn them around quickly.

Nova: Stoke's Path to Orbit

At the center of the story is Nova, Stoke's medium-lift, two-stage, fully reusable rocket.

Nova stands about 100 feet tall and is designed to deliver around 5 metric tons to low Earth orbit in its reusable configuration — squarely targeting mega-constellation deployment, commercial satellite replacement cycles, and responsive government launch.

What sets it apart is the upper stage. While SpaceX's Falcon 9 discards its second stage on every flight, Stoke designed Nova's second stage to survive reentry and land propulsively. It uses an actively cooled metallic heat shield and a full-flow staged-combustion plug-nozzle engine that doubles as a heat shield during descent — a radical departure from ceramic tiles or ablatives.

The booster, powered by seven Zenith full-flow staged-combustion methalox engines, is designed to return to the launch site for a vertical landing. Stoke has spent the past two years de-risking that architecture with its Hopper test vehicle campaigns, full-duration engine hotfires, and structural qualification articles.

Company leaders say orbital flight hardware is now in build, with first-stage tanks, engines, and avionics moving toward integration and launch-site testing at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station's historic Launch Complex 14.

Taking Aim at SpaceX

No startup can avoid the SpaceX comparison, and Stoke is leaning into it.

SpaceX proved booster reuse with Falcon 9 and is now pushing for full reusability with Starship. Stoke's pitch is different: build a smaller, truly reusable rocket from a clean sheet, optimized for high flight rate, fast turnaround, and lower cost per kilogram for the medium-lift market where most commercial and Pentagon payloads actually fly.

Investors are betting that reusability alone is no longer the moat — rapid, airline-like reusability is. If Stoke can demonstrate recovery and re-flight of both stages, even at modest scale initially, it would become only the second U.S. company after SpaceX to routinely re-fly orbital-class hardware, leapfrogging Blue Origin's New Glenn, Rocket Lab's Neutron, and Relativity's Terran R, all of which are still proving out partial or full reuse.

The competitive stakes are rising as launch demand surges from Starlink competitors like Amazon's Project Kuiper, OneWeb successors, and classified Space Force programs that explicitly want assured access and multiple reusable providers.

What's Next: A Bigger Rocket and a Busier Launch Coast

Perhaps the most intriguing disclosure tied to the Series E is Stoke's confirmation of a new, larger rocket in early development.

While details remain under wraps, executives describe it as a natural scale-up of Nova's architecture — retaining full reusability, vertical landing, and the actively cooled upper stage, but with significantly greater payload capacity, a larger fairing, and performance for direct-to-GEO, cislunar, and heavy constellation missions.

In effect, Stoke is following a familiar playbook: prove the hard technology at medium scale, then scale it to take on Falcon Heavy, New Glenn, and eventually Starship for the next decade of space infrastructure.

Near term, expect Stoke to aggressively hire in propulsion, avionics, and production, expand its Florida test and launch footprint, and push toward a first orbital launch attempt. The company has not set a public date, but all signals point to an all-out push to reach the pad, fly, attempt recovery, and iterate fast — exactly the cadence that won SpaceX its lead.

If it succeeds, the $1B bet won't just fund a rocket. It will fund a second way to fly, and re-fly, to orbit.
