Disney Hires Most of Character.AI Staff After Bankruptcy and $20M Asset Deal

Disney Hires Most of Character.AI Staff After Bankruptcy and $20M Asset Deal

TL;DR

  • Disney will hire the majority of Character.AI's remaining staff after the AI chatbot startup filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week, in a talent acquisition tied to a broader AI push.
  • As part of the deal, Disney will pay $20 million to acquire select Character.AI assets, including technology and IP, subject to bankruptcy court approval.
  • Former Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand will join Disney as its first-ever Chief Technology Officer, where he will lead the company's company-wide AI strategy across parks, studios, and streaming.

A Sudden Lifeline After Bankruptcy

Character.AI, once valued at over $1 billion as one of the hottest consumer AI startups of the generative AI boom, filed for bankruptcy earlier this week after months of mounting legal pressure, rising compute costs, and slowing user growth.

The filing marked a stunning fall for the company founded in 2021 by former Google researchers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas. Despite boasting tens of millions of monthly users who chatted with customizable AI characters, the startup struggled to monetize, while facing lawsuits over child safety and copyright concerns related to AI-generated personas.

Disney has now emerged as its unlikely rescuer. Rather than a traditional acquisition, the entertainment giant has structured the transaction as a hiring agreement plus an asset purchase, a model increasingly common in Big Tech AI deals designed to acquire talent and technology while avoiding lengthy antitrust reviews.

Inside the Hiring Agreement

Under the terms disclosed this week, Disney plans to extend offers to the majority of Character.AI's workforce, including its product, engineering, trust and safety, and research teams.

Sources familiar with the matter say Disney expects to bring on dozens of employees, who will form the core of a new AI product group inside the company. The move gives Disney instant AI expertise without assuming Character.AI's debts and legal liabilities, which will remain with the bankrupt estate.

The hires will largely be based in Palo Alto and San Francisco but will work closely with Disney's technology teams in Burbank, New York, and Vancouver. Disney said it will honor short-term retention packages to ensure continuity during the bankruptcy process.

The $20 Million Asset Deal

Separate from the hiring pact, Disney has agreed to pay $20 million to acquire certain Character.AI assets out of bankruptcy. The assets reportedly include core inference technology, character-creation tools, safety classifiers, and licensing rights to its large language model infrastructure.

The $20 million price tag is a fraction of the more than $190 million in venture funding Character.AI had raised from investors including Andreessen Horowitz. The deal still requires approval from the bankruptcy court, with a hearing expected in the coming weeks. Other bidders could theoretically submit higher offers during the court-supervised sale process, though Disney is considered the stalking-horse frontrunner.

Legal filings indicate Disney is not acquiring user data wholesale, a key concern for regulators and privacy advocates. The company said any data transferred will be handled in compliance with privacy laws and existing user deletion requests.

Karandeep Anand Becomes Disney's First CTO

The centerpiece of the deal is leadership. Former Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand, who took over as chief executive in late 2024 after founders Shazeer and De Freitas rejoined Google, will join Disney as its first Chief Technology Officer.

The creation of a CTO role signals how seriously Disney is taking AI. Reporting directly to CEO Bob Iger, Anand will oversee a unified technology strategy spanning Disney Entertainment, ESPN, and Disney Experiences.

Anand brings deep experience from both Big Tech and startups, with prior product leadership stints at Meta and Microsoft before joining Character.AI. At Disney, he is expected to focus on responsible AI deployment, personalization for Disney+ and Hulu, generative AI tools for creators, and interactive experiences in parks and games.

What This Means for Disney's AI Strategy

For Disney, the Character.AI deal is about more than chatbots. Iger has repeatedly said AI will be transformative for storytelling, not a replacement for human creativity.

In recent months, Disney has quietly expanded its Office of Technology Enablement, partnered with OpenAI on licensed character generation for Sora, launched AI-powered customer service agents in its parks, and explored personalized AI companions featuring Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars characters.

Hiring Character.AI's team gives Disney proven expertise in building consumer-facing conversational AI that millions of Gen Z users already love — expertise it can now apply to family-friendly, IP-safe experiences. Insiders say early priorities include AI-powered fan companions, in-park guides, and creator tools for Disney's Imagineers and animators.

The company has stressed it will maintain strict guardrails around child safety, likeness rights, and artist consent, areas where Character.AI previously faced criticism.

What Happens Next for Character.AI

Character.AI's standalone future remains uncertain. The company said its app and website will remain operational during bankruptcy proceedings, but long-term maintenance will depend on court outcomes and Disney's final asset integration.

Creditors, including cloud providers and former employees with equity, are likely to recover only cents on the dollar given the $20 million sale price. The bankruptcy court will also have to address ongoing lawsuits alleging harm from Character.AI chatbots, which could complicate the transfer of IP.

Industry watchers see the deal as the latest example of AI acqui-hires, following similar moves by Google, Microsoft, and Amazon to absorb talent from Inflection, Adept, and Covariant. For Disney, however, it marks its boldest AI talent bet yet — one that could reshape how the 100-year-old entertainment giant builds the next generation of storytelling.
