Microsoft to launch Windows 10 this summer in 190 countries; announce Xiaomi and Lenovo partners


At the WinHEC (Windows Hardware Engineering Community) summit in Shenzen, China, Microsoft announced that it will release Windows 10 this summer (between June and August) in 190 countries and 111 languages.

Microsoft also confirmed that it will offer free upgrade to Windows 10 for users running Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 for the first year after it is released.

In addition the company also announced a  strategic partnership with Lenovo, Tecent and Qihu 360 in China to deliver a seamless Windows 10 upgrade experience to customers.  Microsoft named Xiaomi as its Windows 10 for phone testing partner.


Under the partnership with Xiaomi, Microsoft will offer a select group of Xiaomi Mi 4 users that will be invited to test Windows 10. Users will get the ability to flash their phone with new Windows 10 OS and provide their feedback to to improve the experience. Xiaomi is already doing well with its Android devices and the company for the first time will test a different OS.

Lenovo will offer Windows 10 upgrade services at 2,500 service centers and select retail stores in China when Windows 10 upgrade is available. Lenovo will release the Windows 10 based phones in mid 2015 via China Mobile. 

Tencent is a social networking and gaming service company. It will offer Windows 10 to its customers for free on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. The company will also create Windows 10 universal app and bring their popular PC games such as "League of Legends", Cross fire" and "Dungeon and Fighter to Windows 10 and new Windows store.

Qihu 360, a leading internet security firm in China will also offer upgrade services at service centers to get users onto the latest OS. 

In the event Microsoft also announced a new version of Windows for small footprint IoT devices and will be free when Windows 10 will launch and includes ATMs and Ultrasound machines. Windows 10 will also be available for Qualcomm DragonBoard 410C that is a Windows 10 developer board with integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS and a Snapdragon 410 chipset. 

Microsoft also demoed Windows Hello for the first time and showed off Cortana on the desktop in Mandarin.
