Remix OS brings Android to PC

Jide, the company behind the 'Remix' tablet announced that it will be making its Android based OS, Remix OS, a free download worldwide on January 12.

Remix OS is a forked version of Android, which is based on Android Lollipop. It can be installed on x86-supported (32-bit system architecture) PCs/Laptops. You will also be able to access to Google Play as well.

Since it is designed to run on PCs, the UI resembels a Windows like layout. It supports left-right click, resizable windows, Maximize/Minimize, has its own start menu, Taskbar, system tray, Notification tab and File Manager. There is also a multi-windows feature, allowing you to run multiple apps side by side like you would on Windows or Mac.

To install Remix OS, you will need to download the system image and put it on a USB 3.0 flash drive that supports FAT32, with a minimum storage capacity of 8GB and a recommended writing speed of 20MB/s. You will also have the option to dual-boot with your existing OS. You’ll be able to download Remix OS for PC from Jide from January 12.

As for update, the Remix OS comes with its own OTA updater, and Jide has promised to send regular update. The company also says that it will soon upgrade it to Android Marshmallow.

For those unaware, Jide is Chinese company based in Beijing which was founded in 2014 by three former Google engineers. The company came into spotlight at last year's CES where it introduced the Remix tablet.
