Docoss outs real images and hands-on video of the Rs. 888 X1 smartphone

The newly formed Jaipur based Docoss, caught all out attention this week with its X1 Android smartphone that costs just Rs. 888, making it that second cheapest smartphone in the country after Ringing Bells' Freedom 251. However, following Ringing Bells' Freedom 251 mess, the Docoss X1 was greeted with skepticism and was reportedly called a scam.

Now in a bid to assure prospective buyers, that the X1 is a real-deal, Docoss has shared live photos and hand-on video of the handset on its social channels. The live images shows the phone pre-loaded with Google related apps including Play Store, You Tube and Google Voice Search among others.

While, the hands-on video of Docoss X1 shows the unboxing of the handset and also reveals that it capable of running apps like Facebook and WhatsApp. The box contents include a USB cable and an in-ear headphone.

Spec-wise, the Docoss X1 comes with 4-inch display, 1.3GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 4GB inbuilt expandable storage, 2MP/0.3MP rear and front camera, 3G, Android 4.4 KitKat and 1300mAh battery. The Docoss X1 is up for order on company website and was supposed to end at 10pm today (April 29), however the bookings are still open.

Following Docoss X1 announcement, the Indian Cellular Association said that it is impossible to make a phone like Docoss X1 for Rs. 888. The association pointed out that the components required to make a smartphone, even when purchased in bulk would cost approximately Rs. 1,469, and this price does not include costs and taxes.

“Many of these components are in junk condition and there might be chances of getting them at cheap for small volumes. But even then, the bill of material would be something like $22 (approximately Rs 1,460). Normally, the bill of material would be in excess of $30 (approximately Rs 2,000) and that does not include other costs and taxes,”  said Pankaj Mohindroo, national president of ICA.

Meanwhile, Shahsi Kant Sharma, Docoss Director in an interview with Digit.in, said that the company aims to make money from affiliate marketing. “We’re going in for affiliate marketing. The Docoss X1 will have apps like Flipkart, Amazon and various other Indian e-commerce apps. Each time a Docoss customer installs these apps on their phones, we will get anywhere between Rs 22- Rs 40 for it. This is how we plan to earn from this smartphone,” Sharma added. He also said that the phone is manufactured in China and is imported to the country.

Docoss is not charging buyers beforehand, and is giving the option of cash on delivery instead. Docoss is expected to start shipping the X1 from May 2. The company plans to sell 40,000 units of the phone.
