Samsung announces industry's first 8GB LPDDR4 mobile DRAM module

Samsung has announced the industry's first 8GB LPDDR4 DRAM module aimed at top-end mobile phones, tablets and ultra-thin notebooks. The DRAM module has been manufactured using 10nm processor and utilizes four 16 gigabit (2GB) LPDDR4 memory chips stacked to make an 8GB module.

The 8GB LPDDR4 operates at up to 4266Mbps, which is twice as fast as the DDR4 DRAM for PCs, which operates at 2133 Mbps. This leads to transmission speed of over 34GB/s data on a 64-bit wide memory bus. Thanks to the power efficient manufacturing process the 8GB LPDDR4 RAM consumes the same amount of power as the 20nm-class 4GB DRAM package.

Samsung says that more amount of RAM will be useful for high-end mobile  devices with dual-rear cameras, 4K UHD recording and VR features.

There is no word on when we'll see 8GB RAM on mobile devices or tablet, but we can expect it to be used in Samsung's next flagship Galaxy S8, which is slated for early 2017 release. China's LeEco is also rumored to be working on a smartphone with 8GB RAM.
