Samsung Galaxy S8 could feature 90 percent screen-to-body ratio

Last week, a Samsung executive revealed that the company's upcoming Galaxy S8 will have a "slick design" along with an "improved camera" and an "enhanced artificial intelligence". Now a new report suggests that Galaxy S8 could possibly have a near bezel-less display.

The Investor citing a Samsung executive reports that Samsung is developing a full screen OLED panel, which is expected to be used on Galaxy S8.

Park Won-sang, a principal engineer at Samsung Display said to the publication that the company would roll-out a full-screen display with a display area ratio (a scale that measures space taken up by a display on the front part of a handset) of over 90 percent in 2017, hinting the use of the display in Galaxy S8. Won-sang further mentioned that Samsung will try to push the screen ratio to about 99 percent in the coming years, which means that every side of the device will be covered by the display panel.

For reference, Currently, the average display are ratio on most smartphone is around 80 percent. Samsung's Galaxy S7 and S7 edge comes with 72 percent and 76 percent display area ratio respectively. Xiaomi's recently launched Mi MIX has a edgeless design with 91.3 percent screen-to-body ratio.

It is also being reported that Samsung may have to ditch the home button on the Galaxy S8 in order to achieve such high screen-to-body ratio. This also means that all sensors will have to be built under the screen. A recent report suggested that Galaxy S8 will feature optical fingerprint scanner, which will be placed below the screen

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S8 family at MWC 2017 in February and launch it in March.
