Nokia returns, to enter mobile market with Android smartphones in first half of 2017


It is official. Nokia branded smartphones are making a comeback next year. This has been officially confirmed by HMD Global. The Finland based company today announced its entry into the mobile market with Nokia-branded smartphones. HMD said that the first batch of Nokia-branded Android smartphones will release in first half of 2017.

The announcement comes less than six months after, HMD signed a strategic licensing agreement with Nokia, to use Nokia's brand name on devices for the next 10 year. HMD also announced that the transaction is completed between HMD, FIH Mobile Limited (subsidiary of Foxconn) and Microsoft. 

This means HMD can begin operations as the new home of Nokia phones, and all Nokia branded devices to be launched in the next 10 years will be made by HMD Global with Foxconn as its hardware partner. In return Nokia will receive royalty payments from HMD for sales of every Nokia branded devices, covering both brand and intellectual property rights.

HMD says that it is working on new exciting consumer devices that will focus on innovation quality and experience along with iconic  Nokia mobile phone attributes of design, robustness and reliability.

Additionally, the nokia.com/phones site is now live and the product page reads "We're busy working on Nokia smartphones running Android,". The website will be operated by HMD and a few Nokia branded feature phones are already listed. You can also sign up to be notified by email for all the latest developments happening around Nokia.
