Samsung to sell refurbished Galaxy Note7 units

Last month, a report coming out of Korea claimed that Samsung was planning to sell refurbished units of its disastrous Galaxy Note7 in select market.

Now the South Korean tech giant has officially confirmed, that the company plans to sell returned Galaxy Note7 units as refurbished phones and rental phones. The remaining Note7 units will be recycled, and the salvageable components will be detached for reuse.

The company in a news release also revealed how it will recycle the millions of Note7 units it has in its possession. Samsung said that it established three principle to ensure the Galaxy Note7 units are recycled and processed in an environmental-friendly manner.

First, the company will consider to sell the Note7 as refurbished phones or rental phones where applicable. It also said that the applicability is dependent upon consultations with regulatory authorities and carriers as well as due consideration of local demand. The markets and release dates will be determined accordingly.

The next two steps are for Note7 units that cannot be refurbished.

The second step involves removing salvageable components such as semi-conductors and camera modules from the Note7 units, for reuse. These components will be detached by companies specializing in such services. Lastly, the company will extract metals such as copper, nickel, gold and silver from the Galaxy Note7 using eco-friendly methods.

The announcement comes just right a day before the Galaxy S8 launch.
