Google "Most Likely" To Release Android O On August 21

According to a leak from Evan Blass aka @evleaks, Google will be releasing the stable version of Android O on August 21. Owing to the excellent track record of Evan Blass, we have great faith in Blass' claims. And it's not just Blass who is claiming an 8/21 release for Android O, even Android Police editor David Ruddock has floated the same date.

To remind you, Google had released the first stable build of Android Nougat on August 22 last year. Just as in the case of Nougat, the first developer preview of Android O was released before Google I/O, whereas the first preview builds for older Android versions were released at Google I/O. The reason behind early introduction of the preview builds is as follows:

By releasing a “work in progress” build earlier in development, we have more time to incorporate developer feedback. Also, the earlier preview allows us to hand off the final N release to device makers this summer, so they can get their hands on the latest version of Android earlier than ever.

It may appear that Google is following similar trends for Android O as it did for Nougat. However, unlike last year, the name of this year's Android iteration is yet to be announced by Google. To name Android N, Google had organised a poll wherein it asked the public to vote for what 'N' should stand for. The public voted for 'Nougat' and the results of the poll were announced towards the end of June. As for Android 8.0, we haven't had any polls. Google is yet to announce the name of Android O, but it is widely believed to be called 'Oreo'. August 21 marks "The Great American Solar Eclipse." To add on, Oreo has taken up advertising campaigns in the past which have coincided with solar eclipses.

Whatever Android O might be called, the stable release of Android O seems imminent by the end of this month. The fourth and final developer preview of Android O was released approximately three weeks ago and Google had noted DP4 to be "a release candidate build of Android O." The stable build of Android O is therefore just around the corner.
