Google Extends Security Patches Timeline For Nexus 5X & 6P To November 2018

This morning Google quietly updated the support page of Nexus 5X and 6P giving the two devices two extra months of security patches. If you will open up Google's Nexus support page, you will find a list of various Nexus devices and the time until which the devices will receive major Android upgrades and security patches. Until last night the support page mentioned September 2018 under the column 'No guaranteed security updates after'. Earlier today Google updated that timeline to November 2018.

This means that the Nexus 5X and 6P will now get two extra security patches in September and October 2018. Google updates each of its Pixel and Nexus device to at least two major Android releases following the release of the device. The duo of Nexus 5X and 6P were launched along with Marshmallow in 2015. Both the devices got the Nougat upgrade in 2016 and were recently updated to Oreo. Since the two devices have received two major Android updates, they are unlikely to see Android P coming their way.

Google will be further supporting the Nexus duo in the form of security patches for the next thirteen months until November 2018. If you plan to use your Nexus 5X or 6P post November of 2018, you may want to put on a custom ROM on your device.
