October Android security updates rolling out to Nexus & Pixel devices

The month of October has begun, and as part of monthly Android security update, Google has released its October 2017 security patch for Pixel and Nexus devices. The Pixel maker also released factory images and full OTA zip files for the update as well.

Google says it has fixed 14 issues, with eight issues resolved in security patch dated 2017-10-01, and six in the 2017-10-5 one. The 2017-10-01 patch level covers the Framework, Media Framework and the system vulnerabilities ranging from moderate to critical. The 2017-10-05 patch level focuses on the hardware including patches for kernel, MediaTek and Qualcomm components.

The update is also said to have resolved reboot issues that were plaguing select Pixel devices. Earlier Pixel devices running Android Oreo were rebooting upon launching picture-in-picture mode from YourTube. In other cases, some Pixel devices would function normally for days without any issues and then reboot multiple times.

The update is available for Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Pixel C and Nexus Player.

As usual, Google will roll out the update with October security patches over-the-air to Pixel and Nexus devices soon. You can check for it by going to Settings > System > System update and hit Check for update button, and if available you'll be prompted to download and install the update. It's worth mentioning that the update is rolling out in phases so it will take a few days to reach your device.

For those  impatient, they can download the factory images and OTA zip files and flash them manually to their devices.
