VLC for Android gets a major update: adds PiP mode, Android Auto support, 360-degree videos and more


Popular media player VLC is getting a major upgrade in over a year, and the new 2.5 version for Android brings a slew of features.

VLC 2.5 gets more dynamic and material complaint UI with new animations for video section and audio player, 360-degree video support, picture-in-picture mode for Android 8.0 devices, Android Auto support, Day/Night mode support, equalizer custom presets, among others. There's also an option that lets you resume position for audio media tagged as audiobook or podcast.

The update also brings improvements to the the search. Now when you search for something, it first filter your current view, followed by option to search the whole media libraray. It also gets Google Search integration, so now you can quickly ask Google Assistant to search for something in VLC, and see the results within the app.

There's also a new gesture that allows you to double tap on the screen edges in video player to seek by 10 seconds. Lastly, the update also adds support for screens with aspect ratio up to 18.5:9.
