Google Releases Android Oreo Go Edition Targeted At Low End Devices In Emerging Markets

Google at its I/O keynote in May announced Android Go, a lite version of Android designed for low-end Android devices with less than 1GB RAM. Today, at the Google for India event, Google has launched the new Android based mobile OS as Google Oreo (Go edition). The new OS will be launched as part of Android 8.1, which will roll out tomorrow.

The Android Oreo (Go Edition) is made up of three key elements: Operating system, Google Apps and Google Play Store.

The OS gets performance and storage improvements with data management features and security benefits built-in for smoother software experience. In addition Google will also include new lite version of existing Google apps such as Google Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go, YouTube Go, Google Assistant Go, Files Go, along with custom experience for Gboard. All these apps weighs less than 5MB and are data friendly.

Lastly the Google Play Store will be tuned to highlight the apps designed to work best on Go edition devices, in addition to other apps.

Google says Android Oreo (Go edition) is optimized to deliver 15 percent faster performance, security and data management. The pre-installed apps on the OS has been optimized to take up to 50 percent less space which doubles the amount of available storage on entry-level devices.

Android Oreo (Go Edition) will be available for third-party developers and device makers soon. The first devices running the light-weight OS is expected to launch by Google partners in the coming months.
