The update matters because several jurisdictions, including Texas, Utah, and Louisiana in the United States, have introduced age-verification rules that can affect how app stores and developers handle user access, parental approval, and content restrictions. Google says its Play tooling is intended to help developers meet those obligations.

What the Play Age Signals API provides

According to Google’s documentation, the API can return age-related status and age-range information for eligible users, rather than a precise birthday or other direct identifier. The default age bands in supported jurisdictions are 0–12, 13–15, 16–17, and 18+, though Google notes that custom ranges can also be configured in some cases.

The API is client-side and can be called while the app is open. Google also says age signals are only returned for users in regions where Play is legally required to provide age-category data.

Google says it has already started rolling out age signals and the Play Store age-verification flow for new users in Texas, and that version 0.0.3 of the API returns age signals for eligible users in Texas and Brazil at this time. Earlier developer notes also indicate the API has been moving through staged releases tied to legal deadlines and regional requirements.

The company’s release notes show the API is still evolving, with updates such as a new DECLARED user status and a fake implementation for testing. That suggests Google is building out the tooling developers will need for integration, QA, and policy compliance over time.

How developers can integrate it

Google says the Play Age Signals API is supported on phones, foldables, and tablets running Android 6.0 and higher. To use it, developers add the Play Age Signals dependency in their app build files and then request age signals at runtime through the client-side API.

Developers can also configure custom minimum-age ranges in the Play Console, where Google allows up to three minimum ages in the “Custom age ranges” section. Google says those minimums must be at least two years apart and can be changed once per year.
