OpenAI vs App Store: How ChatGPT Is Becoming the Future of Software Discovery

TL;DR

  • OpenAI has turned ChatGPT into an apps platform with a built-in directory, instant checkout, and agentic discovery, letting users invoke Spotify, Canva, Booking.com and others by conversation instead of downloads.
  • Developers get a new distribution channel via the Apps SDK and AgentKit with lower friction than Apple's and Google's 15-30% toll, plus access to ChatGPT's 800 million weekly users and AI agents that act on their behalf.
  • Apple and Google still control mobile OS distribution, payments, and default placement, but agentic AI threatens to shift power from app icons to intents, forcing a fight over fees, rules, and who owns software discovery.

The App Store Is No Longer the Only Store

For nearly two decades, software discovery has meant the same thing: open Apple's App Store or Google Play, search, download, sign in, and hope you remember to use the app again. OpenAI is betting that era is over.

Over the past year, the company has systematically rebuilt ChatGPT from a chatbot into a platform. Users no longer just chat - they summon apps, buy things, book trips, design slides, and play music without ever leaving the conversation. Type "make a playlist for my run" and Spotify appears inside ChatGPT. Say "design a pitch deck for a coffee brand" and Canva builds it inline. Ask for a weekend in Tokyo and Booking.com, Expedia and OpenTable assemble flights, hotels and dinner reservations together.

It is fast, contextual, and critically, it skips the download. That is the direct challenge to Apple and Google dominance.

From Chatbot to Operating Layer

The shift accelerated at OpenAI's DevDay 2025 and through 2026 with three core launches.

First, Apps in ChatGPT and the Apps SDK. Developers can now build interactive, full-screen apps using React, JavaScript and MCP servers that run natively inside a ChatGPT conversation. Instead of a separate icon on your phone, the app surfaces when ChatGPT thinks it is relevant.

Second, the App Directory and Search. ChatGPT gained its own version of an app store - a curated directory and natural-language search where humans and agents can find tools. There is no 70-step install flow. You just start talking and authorize with one tap.

Third, Agentic Commerce and ChatGPT Checkout. Powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol co-built with Stripe, ChatGPT supports Instant Checkout in the U.S. Users can buy from Etsy, Shopify merchants, and major brands directly in chat, with payment, shipping and order updates handled conversationally. OpenAI takes a cut of commerce, not a 30% tax on all digital goods.

Add in ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI's AI browser, and Operator-style agents that can click, fill forms and complete multi-step tasks, and ChatGPT starts to look less like an app and more like the place where apps are found and used.

Why Developers Are Paying Attention

For developers, the pitch is simple: distribution without gatekeepers.

Building for iOS and Android means App Review, strict payment rules, 15-30% commissions, and fighting for visibility among millions of apps. Building for ChatGPT means shipping a lightweight MCP-based app, getting discovered by intent rather than keyword ranking, and reaching a user base OpenAI now pegs at around 800 million weekly active users.

OpenAI sweetened the deal in 2026 with AgentKit, a toolkit for building, testing and monetizing agents, plus clearer revenue terms for apps and commerce. Early partners include Figma, Coursera, Zillow, Peloton, and DoorDash, many offering interactive widgets that adapt to the conversation - a workout plan that becomes a Peloton routine, a lesson that becomes a Coursera quiz.

The model also favors smaller startups. You do not need a massive marketing budget to win the App Store charts. If your app best completes the user's task, the agent picks you. Discovery becomes merit-based and task-driven, not icon-driven.

Apple and Google Are Not Standing Still

This does not mean Apple and Google are doomed. They still own the phones, the operating systems, push notifications, NFC payments, background processes, and the default rules that matter.

Apple continues to enforce App Store guidelines on external payments and is pushing Apple Intelligence deeply into iOS, Siri and Spotlight to keep discovery on-device. Google is doing the same with Gemini inside Android, Play and Chrome, turning its assistant into an agent that can also book, buy and summarize across apps.

Both giants argue their model protects privacy, security and quality - and regulators are watching. The irony is rich: as Apple and Google face antitrust pressure in the U.S. and EU over app store monopolies, OpenAI is creating a new centralized marketplace of its own, with its own curation, ranking algorithm and fees.

The key question for 2026 and 2027 is whether OpenAI will become just another gatekeeper, or something different. Developers want lower fees and open protocols like MCP and ACP, but they also fear dependence on ChatGPT's ranking and opaque moderation.

Agentic AI Redefines Software Distribution

The biggest disruption is not economic, it is conceptual.

In the app store model, humans discover software. In the agentic model, agents discover software for humans - and increasingly for other agents. You do not remember that you have a travel app. You just say "plan my trip under $1,500" and ChatGPT orchestrates five apps behind the scenes.

That flips software distribution from downloads and monthly active users to invocations and task completions. The best interface may be no interface at all, just an outcome.

It also creates a two-sided network effect OpenAI is counting on: more apps make ChatGPT more useful, which brings more users, which brings more developers. If agents become the primary way we use software at work, ChatGPT could become what Windows was in the 90s or the iPhone was in the 2010s - the default layer.

What Comes Next

Expect three battles ahead.

One, money. Will OpenAI keep commerce fees low enough to lure merchants away from Apple Pay and Google Pay rails, and will it share subscription revenue fairly?

Two, trust. Agents handling money, travel and personal data will need bulletproof permissions, verification and recall. One high-profile hallucinated booking could stall adoption.

Three, control. Will Apple allow a full rival app store inside ChatGPT on iPhone? Will regulators force sideloading, alternative payments and agent interoperability?

For now, momentum is with OpenAI. It did not kill the App Store overnight. It did something more subtle: it made downloading an app feel old-fashioned. And once discovery moves into conversation, there may be no going back.
