A Modern-Day XL1, But Fully Electric

Volkswagen is going back to its roots to show the future. Just days ahead of IAA Mobility 2026 in Munich, the brand unveiled a radical efficiency halo car - a spiritual successor to the legendary 2013 XL1 diesel hypermiler, now reimagined as a pure EV.

Where the original XL1 looked like a science experiment and sipped diesel at 261 mpg, this new concept - dubbed the ID.XL - is built around one obsession: doing more with less. VW claims consumption of just 6.2 kWh per 100 km, or roughly 10 miles per kWh. For context, the Lucid Air Pure, currently the EPA's most efficient production EV in America at around 146 MPGe, uses about 13-14 kWh per 100 km. In other words, VW's halo is nearly twice as efficient.

If those lab numbers hold in the real world, it means more than 620 miles of range from a modest 38.5 kWh LFP battery pack. No 200-kWh Hummer-style brick, no 1,000-hp tri-motor setup. Just clever engineering.

The Slate-Inspired Trick: Radical Subtraction

The craziest part isn't what VW added, it's what it took away. And that's where startup Slate Auto comes in.

Slate made headlines with its $20,000 minimalist pickup - crank windows, no stereo, no touchscreen, no paint, bring-your-own-phone for infotainment. VW's engineers openly admit they studied that playbook.

The ID.XL weighs under 1,000 kg, or about 2,200 pounds - lighter than a base Polo and almost half the weight of an ID.4. How?

First, de-contenting. There's a single central touchscreen delete - just a phone dock and a head-up display. Manual seat sliders, fabric pull-straps instead of door handles, fixed rear windows, steel wheels, and a single speaker for navigation prompts only. Even traditional paint was replaced with a recyclable foil wrap, saving 15 kg.

Second, downsizing the powertrain. A single, in-house-developed 100 kW rear axial-flux motor weighs just 28 kg and eliminates the need for heavy cooling, thick high-voltage cabling, and a massive battery structure. The entire 400-volt LFP pack is structural but air-cooled.

VW calls it "efficiency by subtraction," and it echoes Slate's core thesis: weight is range, and luxury is heavy.

Next-Gen Aero That Makes An ID.7 Look Like A Brick

Lightweighting is only half the story. The other half is cheating the wind.

The ID.XL has a drag coefficient of just 0.16, undercutting even the Mercedes Vision EQXX at 0.17 and the Lucid Air at 0.21. VW achieved it with classic XL1 tricks taken to the next level.

The car is just 44 inches tall, with a teardrop tandem-style cabin, fully enclosed rear wheels with carbon spats, cameras instead of mirrors, no rear window, an active underbody diffuser, and a tapered boat-tail that extends at highway speeds. Up front, there is no grille at all - just a smooth nose with active shutters and air curtains that route air around the ultra-narrow 155mm tires.

Even the floor is a full carbon undertray, and the wheelbase is stretched to keep airflow attached as long as possible. The result is a car that needs only about 8 horsepower to cruise at 60 mph.

Inside, It's More IKEA Than ID.Buzz

Pop the gullwing-style doors and the Slate influence is even clearer. The dashboard is a single recycled composite beam with a clip-on phone mount, a pair of exposed cupholders, and a DIY accessory rail for owners to 3D-print their own mounts and storage.

Seats are hammock-style slings suspended from carbon tubes - four bolts each, fully removable. No power adjustment, no heating elements, no massaging functions. VW says it saved 60 kg versus ID.3 seats alone.

There is no giant glass roof, no ambient lighting with 30 colors, no power tailgate. Materials are undyed flax fiber, recycled PET, and exposed aluminum. It's stark, but in person, reviewers say it feels clever rather than cheap - like a Dyson product or an original 2CV.

What This Means For Affordable, Long-Range Volkswagens

Don't expect to buy an ID.XL at your local dealer. VW is clear: this is a halo and a rolling lab, not a production car.

But almost everything underneath is production-intent for its next generation of affordable EVs. The efficient silicon-carbide inverter, the low-rolling-resistance tires developed with Bridgestone, the lightweight axial-flux motor, and the aero simulation tools will debut in the production ID.Polo and ID.Cross in late 2026, and crucially in the €20,000 ID.1 / ID.Every1 due in 2027.

The message is strategic. While rivals chase range by stuffing in bigger 100+ kWh packs, VW is betting it can deliver 250-300 miles of real range from a cheap, small 35-40 kWh LFP pack simply by making cars lighter and slipperier. That cuts cost, cuts charging time, cuts raw material demand, and could make long-range EVs genuinely affordable.

In an era of heavy, $60,000+ electric SUVs, Volkswagen's most exciting EV isn't bigger or faster. It's lighter, simpler, and smarter - and it just showed Lucid how efficiency is really done.
