Anthropic IPO Paper Gains Reveal What Early Backers Are Worth Now

TL;DR
- Anthropic's valuation has rocketed from around $1 billion in 2021 to $183 billion in its September 2025 Series F, turning early checks into multi-billion-dollar paper fortunes ahead of a potential IPO.
- Google and Amazon stand as the biggest strategic winners, with combined investments of over $10 billion now worth an estimated 3x to 8x on paper depending on entry point.
- Early venture backers including Spark Capital, Menlo Ventures, Lightspeed, and General Catalyst are sitting on some of the largest paper multiples in recent venture history, with Jaan Tallinn, Sutter Hill, and Center for Emerging Risk Research among the earliest beneficiaries.
The $183 Billion Benchmark Everyone Is Watching
Anthropic has not officially filed for an IPO, but Wall Street is already doing the math. After closing a $13 billion Series F in September 2025 at a $183 billion post-money valuation led by Iconiq Capital, Fidelity, and Lightspeed Venture Partners, the AI lab behind Claude is now the most valuable pure-play AI startup in private markets after OpenAI.
That $183 billion figure has become the reference point for calculating paper wealth. For investors who got in during Anthropic's seed, Series A in 2021-2022, and Series B in 2023, even modest checks are now worth hundreds of millions on paper. For giants who wrote billion-dollar checks later, the gains are measured in billions.
For context on how fast the surge happened: Anthropic was valued at roughly $1 billion to $1.3 billion in 2021, around $4-5 billion in mid-2023, $18.4 billion in early 2024 after its Amazon deal, $61.5 billion in its March 2025 Series E, and then tripled to $183 billion just six months later.
Who Invested When: The Early Cap Table
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives Dario and Daniela Amodei. Its earliest institutional support came from a tight circle of AI-aligned and contrarian investors.
Sutter Hill Ventures, Center for Emerging Risk Research (CERR), and Jaan Tallinn, the Skype co-founder, were among the earliest backers in 2021, when valuations were still near $1 billion. Spark Capital, which would later lead multiple rounds, first invested in the 2022 Series A alongside Sam Bankman-Fried's Alameda Research, Menlo Ventures, and General Catalyst.
The $580 million Series B in early 2023, led by Sam Bankman-Fried before his stake was later sold, proved pivotal. Then came Google's $300 million strategic investment in February 2023 at roughly a $5 billion valuation, followed by Spark Capital's $300 million-led Series C in May 2023 at a similar level.
By fall 2023, the stakes got bigger. Amazon announced an initial $1.25 billion investment in September 2023 as part of a deal that could reach $4 billion, valuing Anthropic around $18 billion. Google followed with a commitment of up to $2 billion in October 2023.
Google: The Biggest Early Strategic Winner
No traditional venture fund has more riding on Anthropic than Google.
Google initially invested $300 million in early 2023, then committed an additional $2 billion later that year, and participated again in the $13.7 billion combined Series E and debt rounds in late 2024 and early 2025. In total, Google has put in more than $3 billion in cash and cloud commitments.
If Google's first $300 million bought in at around $5 billion, that tranche alone is worth an estimated $10.9 billion on paper at $183 billion — a roughly 36x paper multiple. Even its larger $2 billion tranche at ~$18 billion is worth roughly 10x, or about $20 billion. Combined, analysts estimate Google's Anthropic stake could carry a paper value north of $25-30 billion, making it one of the most lucrative corporate venture bets of the decade.
Google also holds a crucial commercial relationship, supplying Anthropic with TPU cloud capacity, which deepens the strategic value beyond pure equity.
Amazon: $8 Billion Bet Turned Into An IPO Cornerstone
Amazon has invested the most absolute dollars of any Anthropic backer — $8 billion in total.
Amazon invested $1.25 billion in September 2023, another $2.75 billion to complete its initial $4 billion commitment in March 2024 at the $18.4 billion valuation, and then another $4 billion in November 2024.
On paper, the first $4 billion tranche is now worth an estimated $39.8 billion at $183 billion — nearly a 10x paper return. The second $4 billion tranche, which came in at roughly $40-60 billion blended valuation, is worth roughly 3x to 4.5x, or $12-18 billion.
In total, Amazon's $8 billion is sitting on an estimated $52-58 billion in paper value. Amazon Web Services is also Anthropic's primary cloud and training partner, and Claude is a flagship model on Amazon Bedrock, tying the investment directly to AWS revenue growth ahead of any IPO.
Venture Winners: Spark, Menlo, Lightspeed and General Catalyst
Among pure venture firms, Spark Capital is widely seen as the top paper winner. Spark invested across the Series A, led the $300 million Series C and $750 million Series D in 2023-2024, and co-led the $3.5 billion Series E in March 2025 at $61.5 billion. With total exposure estimated at $1.5-2 billion, Spark's early tranches at $4-5 billion valuations are up 36-45x. Even blended, the firm is likely sitting on $8-12 billion in paper value.
Menlo Ventures made one of the boldest follow-on moves in venture history, raising a $750 million special-purpose vehicle in 2024 solely for Anthropic at around $18 billion, plus participation in the Series E and F. That $750 million SPV alone is worth an estimated $7.4 billion on paper — a 10x in just over a year.
Lightspeed Venture Partners, which led the $13 billion Series F alongside Iconiq and Fidelity, invested $1 billion+ at $61.5 billion and $183 billion. Its earlier $450 million+ exposure from 2023 rounds is up sharply, cushioning the higher-priced later entries.
General Catalyst, Bessemer Venture Partners, and IVP, all Series A and B participants in 2021-2023, hold some of the highest multiples. A $50 million check written at a $1.5 billion valuation in 2021 would be worth roughly $6.1 billion today on paper — a 122x multiple before dilution.
The FTX Factor and Other Surprise Winners
One of the strangest twists: bankrupt crypto exchange FTX and Alameda Research were once Anthropic's largest early outside holders with a $500 million Series B stake. That stake was sold in 2024 for $884 million to a consortium including GIC of Singapore, Jane Street, Fidelity, and Lightspeed to repay FTX creditors.
That sale, at roughly $18 billion valuation, now looks like a massive discount. Had FTX held, that $500 million would be worth an estimated $5 billion at $183 billion. Instead, buyers like GIC and Jane Street have seen a 10x paper gain in 18 months.
Other notable holders now sitting on large paper gains include Salesforce Ventures, Databricks Ventures, Cisco Investments, Qualcomm Ventures, and sovereign funds like GIC and the Qatar Investment Authority, which entered in the Series E.
What This Means For A Potential IPO
None of these gains are liquid yet, and dilution, preferences, and IPO pricing will change the final numbers. Private valuations also reflect preferred shares with liquidation preferences, not common-stock IPO pricing.
Still, the paper math explains why an Anthropic IPO could be the largest tech listing since Meta or Alibaba. At $183 billion private, a public debut at $250-300 billion — a level bankers have reportedly discussed for late 2026 or 2027 — would push Amazon's stake toward $80-90 billion and turn early venture funds into decacorn returners.
For now, early Anthropic backers are doing something rare in venture: sitting tight, marking up, and waiting for what could be a generational liquidity event.
