Google Universal Cart Launches in the US for Search and Gemini

TL;DR

  • Google has launched Universal Cart in the US across Google Search and the Gemini app, letting shoppers save products from multiple retailers into a single, persistent cart to check out later.
  • The feature supports unified checkout with Google Pay, automatic deal-tracking and price-drop alerts, and Gemini-powered assistance for comparisons, sizing, and restocks.
  • The launch marks a major push into agentic commerce, positioning Google as a checkout layer to rival Amazon and AI shopping tools from OpenAI, Microsoft, and Perplexity.

What Is Google Universal Cart?

Google is turning Search and Gemini into a shopping cart. Starting this week in the US, users will see a new Universal Cart experience that collects products they find across Google Search, Google Shopping, and the Gemini app into one shared cart.

Instead of juggling dozens of tabs from Best Buy, Shopify stores, Target, and DTC brands, shoppers can tap a new Add to Universal Cart button on product listings. Items stay saved in one place, synced to their Google Account, so a cart started on desktop Search can be finished later in Gemini on mobile.

Google says the feature is rolling out now in the US on mobile and desktop for Search, and inside the Gemini app for iOS and Android. No extra app or sign-up is required beyond a Google Account.

How It Works in Search and Gemini

In Google Search, Universal Cart appears directly on product cards, the Shopping tab, and AI Mode results. When you search for something like best noise-canceling headphones under $300 or linen dress for a wedding, eligible results now show prices, images, retailer options, shipping details, and an Add to Universal Cart pill alongside the traditional Visit Site link.

In the Gemini app, shopping becomes conversational. You can prompt Gemini with requests like Find me trail running shoes for flat feet under $150 and add my top two picks to my cart, or Add this lamp in brass to my cart and remind me if it drops below $80. Gemini will pull live listings, compare specs and reviews, and manage adds, removals, and quantity changes.

Checkout remains with the retailer. When you're ready, tapping Checkout in Universal Cart splits your items back out by merchant for payment. Google pre-fills shipping and payment via Google Pay and auto-applies coupons found across the web where available, reducing the traditional multi-site checkout friction.

What Shoppers Can Actually Do With a Unified Cart

The core promise is cross-retailer convenience. Key capabilities at launch include:

Unified Saving and Checkout Prep: Mix and match products from different stores — for example, a TV from Best Buy, an HDMI cable from Walmart, and a wall mount from a Shopify merchant — and keep them in a single list with live totals, taxes, and shipping estimates in one view.

Price Tracking and Deal Alerts: Universal Cart automatically monitors prices for saved items. If a price drops, goes on sale, or comes back in stock, Google sends a push notification, email, or Gemini alert, with an option to buy instantly.

AI Comparisons and Nudges: Gemini can summarize differences between items in your cart, surface ratings and return policies, flag cheaper alternatives from other sellers, and warn about sizing, compatibility, or low stock.

Shared Lists and Reordering: Carts and saved collections can be shared via link, making it useful for holiday shopping, registries, dorm room supplies, and household restocks. For everyday essentials, Gemini can suggest reorders based on past carts.

Why It Matters for AI-Powered Ecommerce

Universal Cart is Google's biggest commerce move in years, and it comes as search itself is being reshaped by AI. With AI Mode, conversational answers, and visual search now driving product discovery, Google needed a way to keep the transaction from slipping away to Amazon, TikTok Shop, or AI agents that check out elsewhere.

By owning the cart, Google owns intent. Retailers get higher-converting traffic and access to Google's new agentic checkout standards, including the Universal Commerce Protocol it co-developed with Shopify, Target, Walmart, Wayfair, and others. In return, Google gets real-time inventory, pricing, and purchase-signal data that makes its AI recommendations smarter.

It also sets up a direct showdown in agentic commerce. OpenAI has integrated instant checkout in ChatGPT, Microsoft is testing buy-action Copilot agents, and Perplexity has dabbled in one-click buying. Google's advantage is scale — billions of Search users and deep Google Pay distribution — plus its neutral marketplace position as an aggregator rather than a seller competing with merchants.

Retailers, Brands, and Competition

For launch, Google says major US partners including Shopify, Target, Wayfair, Walmart, and Best Buy support Universal Cart sync, meaning inventory, fulfillment, and returns are handled by the merchant. Smaller merchants using Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce can opt in without rebuilding their checkout.

For brands, the tradeoff is familiar: more visibility and fewer abandoned carts, but less control over the customer journey and more dependence on Google's AI to represent products fairly. Google insists ranking remains based on relevance, price, availability, and reviews — not on who pays for placement — though sponsored listings will still be clearly labeled.

Analysts see the launch as defensive and offensive. Defensive, because AI assistants threaten to intermediate shopping entirely. Offensive, because a persistent, account-level cart gives Google a logged-in commerce graph it has long lacked compared to Amazon.

Availability and What's Next

Universal Cart is live now in the US in English, with broader retailer coverage rolling out through the holiday season. Google says features like multi-user shared carts, virtual try-on from the cart, and one-tap agentic checkout where Gemini completes the purchase on your behalf with confirmation are coming next.

International expansion to the UK, Canada, and India is expected in 2027, alongside deeper integration with YouTube Shopping, Google Lens, and Android's Circle to Search.

For now, US shoppers can find it by looking for the cart icon in Search's Shopping tab and in Gemini's new Shopping hub. If you've ever wished your Google searches actually remembered what you wanted to buy, that wish just came true.
