HP has officially introduced the Elite x3, a Windows 10 smartphone with high-end specs, that is capable of powering a desktop or notebook. Even though it's a smartphone, the Elite x3 is designed to work with an optional Mobile Extender which lets you use the phone like a laptop, or you can connect it to a Desk Dock, for a PC experience.

HP is aiming the Elite x3 for the enterprise users, and it boasts many security features including fingerprint sensor, Iris scanner, 256-bit key full disk encryption, and TPM 2.0.

The HP Elite x3 sports a 5.96-inch WQHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass 4 protection and is powered by 2.15GHz quad-core Snapdrgaon 820 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage, further expandble via microSD card up to 2TB. For imaging, the Elite x3 has 16-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, f/2.0 aperture and 8-megapixel front camera. There is also an Iris camera on the front and fingerprint scanner on the back for unlocking the device

For connectivity there is Wi-Fi MiMo 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, LTE, 3G, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, USB 3.0 port with USB Type-C connector. It is fueled by a 4150mAh battery that supports Quick Charging technology for both Qi or PMA standard.

It comes with IP67 rating, which means the Elite x3 has the ability to withstand immersion in water for up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. It is also designed to pass MIL-STD 810G testing so that it can survive a 4-foot drop. There are stereo front-facing Bang & Olufsen certified speakers. It also has a series of Pogo pins on the back, allowing it to work with third party jackets or docking solutions.

The HP Elite X3 ships with two accessories - Desk Dock and Mobile Extender. Using the Desk Dock you can connect the Elite x3 to an external display using Continuum for a full fledged PC experience. The Desk Dock houses a DisplayPort, 2 x USB Type-A ports, a USB Type-C port and RJ-45 Ethernet port.

The Mobile Extender looks like a laptop and has a 12.5-inch 1080p display, a battery and keyboard, but does not have a processor, memory or storage, instead it requires the Elite x3 for the processing power. You can connect the Elite x3 to the Mobile Extender with a USB Type-C or through wireless connection.
