LG G6 will reportedly ditch modular design and friends module

LG's flagship, the G5 was first of its kind semi-modular smartphone that came with modular accessories called friends that can be swapped with the removable battery to give the device extra functionality. Even though it won high praise from the critics for the modular attempt, it was not a commercial success, resulting in disappointing sales for LG.

Now a new report coming out of Korea suggests that LG will ditch the modular design for its next flagship allegedly called LG G6. Instead it will stick with the regular smartphone design. This also means that the G6 will not support modular accessories that were made for G5.

The report says that LG is planning to develop its next flagship based on demand from its customers and market rather than taking risk and buried in creating innovations. Various components of G6 like boards and audio chips are being prepared with a non-modular design in mind.

When LG launched the G5, it said that the modular components will work with future LG devices. The report further says that even though LG is taking this move, it is internally concerned from modular strategy, since the modules that were sold with G5 will be obsolete and not compatible with future LG devices.

The report also says that LG G6 will have a new function that was not seen in previous LG devices. The report does not say much about this function, but claims that LG is planning to release the G6 in spring of 2017 pointing at MWC unveiling.
