Xiaomi Mi VR, a $29 VR headset with controller


Xiaomi announced two new smartphones, the Mi Note 2 with curved display and optional global LTE support and the other Mi MIX with no bezels. In addition, the Chinese smartphone maker announced Mi VR, it's new virtual reality headset.

Like most VR headsets in market, the Mi VR also uses smartphone as display and processing hardware. It is compatible with a range of Xiaomi's high-end smartphones such as Mi Note 2, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus and Mi 5.

The Mi VR comes with a handheld 9-axis motion controller for interaction with virtual environment and has built-in dedicated motion sensor featuring 16ms ultra-low latency.

Overall, the new Mi VR is a step up from the MI VR Play, which was launched back in 2015, which was Xiaomi's take on Google's Cardboard headset. The Mi VR looks more like Samsung's Gear VR headset.

Xiaomi is also introducing a new MIUI VR store to download VR contents, that includes more than 30 VR apps and over 500 panaromic video.

The Xiaomi Mi VR is priced at a low CNY 199 (approx. Rs. 1,936/ $29).
