Samsung Pay gets UPI payments support in India

Samsung's mobile payment platform Samsung Pay launched in India last month. At launch the South Korean tech giant, said that the company was testing Unified Payments Interface (UPI) integration and the support will be added soon.

Now, the UPI support for Samsung Pay has gone live, allowing Samsung device users to make payments from their bank accounts.

How it works? Select UPI in the main screen of Samsung Pay, and tap on 'Add' to add your bank account. You can create your own "Payment address" in Samsung's UPI app and link your bank account, which is registered with your mobile number, following which you can transfer money.

For the uninitiated, UPI is a payment system that lets you transfer money between any two bank accounts by using a smartphone. Users will not have to type card details, IFSC code or net banking/wallet passwords, making the transfer of money easier.

Samsung Pay is currently compatible with select Samsung Galaxy Smartphones including  Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy Note5, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy A5 (2017), Galaxy A7 (2017) Galaxy A5 (2016) and Galaxy A7 (2016). The recently launched Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will also get Samsung Pay support upon its release on May 5.

Besides UPI, Samsung Pay also works with most of the credit and debit cards, and digital wallets like PayTm. To make a payment, the user should open the Samsung Pay app on his/her smartphone, select the payment option, and authenticate the purchase using a pin or fingerprint scanner, and then place the phone near the machines at a PoS terminal. The service supports both NFC and MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) technology.
