Acer's and HP's Windows Mixed Reality headsets go on pre-order; new motion controller announced

Microsoft back in October at its Windows 10 event announced that it will launch affordable Windows 10 compatible Mixed Reality headset in partnership with third party companies, starting at $299.

Now Microsoft at its Build Conference 2017, has announced that the company has opened pre-orders for Windows Mixed Reality dev kits from Acer and HP in the Microsoft Store.

The Acer Windows Mixed Reality Headset Developer Edition is priced at $299, and the HP Windows Mixed Reality Headset Developer Edition will cost $329.

Both headsets are equipped with inside-out tracking, so you don't need to set up external cameras or IR emitter to have a immersive experience as you move with six degrees of freedom in mixed-reality.

The Acer Mixed Reality headset sports two high-resolution liquid crystal display at 1440 x 1440, 95-degree horizontal field of view, refresh rate of up to 90 Hz, front hinged display, HDMI 2.0, USB 3.0, 3.5mm audio and mic jack.

HP's Mixed Reality headset has the same features, but comes with double-padded headband and adjustment knob making it comfortable to wear.

The headset requires Windows 10 Creators update, and Microsoft recommends app developers to use a system with Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 1700 CPU, NVIDIA GTX 980/1060 or AMD Radeon RX 480 GPU and 16GB RAM or more. The systyem should also have 10GB additional free space, HDMI/DisplayPort, a USB 3.0 Type-A port and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.

Microsoft also announced a set of motion controllers for the Windows Mixed Reality VR headset. They have buttons, sensors, and grips to let you interact with virtual environement using hand and arm motions. The motion controllers offer precise and responsive tracking of movement in your field of view using the sensors in your headset.

Acer is expected to offer a bundle with headset and Microsoft motion controllers for $399.
