Microsoft takes on Chrome OS with Windows 10 S


Microsoft at its educational event announced a new version of Windows 10 called Windows 10 S, the company's answer to Chrome OS aimed at schools and education market. Microsoft says that Windows 10 S is is streamlined for performance, security and was inspired by students and teachers and it is the best Windows version ever for schools.

The Windows 10 S operating system is designed to work on low-end hardware and offer tighter security as the new operating system is only allowed to run verified apps from the Windows Store. However, you can switch to Windows 10 Pro any time if you want to install apps that is not compatible with Windows 10 S. It also boasts faster boot and Login times and the ability to setup machines using a USB drive with pre-confirgured options.

It will have Microsoft's Edge as the default browser, as well as default search provider (Bing) which can't be changed, because Microsoft says Edge is more secure than Firefox and Chrome browser. However, you can download other browser from Windows Store, but Edge will remain the default browser. Apart from being stone walled to the Windows Store, the rest of the features of Windows 10 S is similar to Windows 10.



Microsoft has partnered with a wide-range of PC makers including Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, Samsung, HP for creating new devices that runs the new Windows 10 S. The devices will have a starting price of $189, and come bundled with free subscription to Minecraft: Education Edition.

Windows 10 S will also be free for school that are running Windows 10 Pro on their PCs, and include free Minecraft education edition, Office 365 education with Microsoft Teams.
