Microsoft's Surface Laptop is a $999 laptop aimed at students


Microsoft at its Education event a new Surface product called Surface Laptop, designed to run the new Windows 10 S operating system. It is the most affordable device in the company's Surface line up and is aimed at higher education students or professionals who just want a Surface device.

Unlike the Surface Book, the company's first laptop with detachable keyboard, the Surface Laptop is a true traditional laptop sporting a clamshell design and the keyboard is non-detachable. It has Alcantra fabric-covered keyboard with responsive keyset, large trackpad and soft plam rest offering typing comfort. The laptop sports metal body, weighs 1.25kg and is 14.47mm at its thickest point (thinnest point at just 9.9mm). It will arrive in Burugundy, Cobalt Blue, Platinum and Graphite Gold colors.



The Surface Laptop feature 13.5-inch (2256 x 1504 pixels) PixelSense touch display display with ultra-thin bezel and a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. The laptop is powered by seventh generation Intel Core i5/i7 processor (i5: Intel HD graphics 620, i7: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640)with 4GB/8GB/16GB RAM options and 128GB/256GB/512GB storage options.

It includes 720p HD front facing camera that works with Windows Hello, WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, USB 3.0 port, MiniDisplay port, Surface Connect, microSD card slot, stereo speakers and 3.5mm headphone jack.

To keep the system cool, there's vapor chambers shaped as heatpipes integrated into the aluminum finished back panel, and the laptop will work with Surface accessories like Surface Pen and Surface Dial.



Microsoft claims that Surface Laptop offers up to 15 hours of battery life, four hours more than Apple's 13-inch MacBook Pro. It is also offering one-year subscription to Office 365 Personal and 1TB of free storage on OneDrive.

The Surface Laptop price starts at $999 for the base model with Intel Core i5 processor/4GB RAM/128GB SSD. Pre-orders are now available in the US, and will hit stores on June 15th.
