What We Know About The Google Pixel 2 - All Leaks Covered

We are only a day away from the launch of the second iteration of the Pixel phones. Over the last twenty four hours, the Pixel phones have been leaked heavily. Through the means of this post, we will brief you on everything we know about the upcoming Pixel devices.

Before we go any deeper, it is safe to mention that there will be only two variants of the Pixel 2. Like last year, we have similar naming trends. The smaller Pixel will be called Pixel 2 and the larger one will be called Pixel XL 2.

Pixel 2 Specifications

The image you see at the top is how the Pixel 2 will look like. The Pixel 2 is being manufactured by HTC and is codenamed Walleye. Google has kept the screen size like on the original Pixel at 5-inches. The display would be having a Full HD resolution, the standard 16:9 aspect ratio (which means thick bezels) and will be backed by Gorilla Glass 5. If there were one thing that made last year's Pixels bag the 'smartphone of the year' award from reviewers and enthusiasts alike, it was the camera. Google would be carrying that bandwagon forward with a 12MP rear snapper (no dual camera setup) and a "Google Imaging Chip" (believed to be an AI specific chip for processing images). We don't have any knowledge about the front facing camera yet but it is believed to be a 8MP shooter. The battery capacity will be 2700mAh along with support for Quick Charging. As rumored earlier, the Pixel 2 will be ditching the headphone jack but will sport dual front facing speakers. The phone will also be having the IP67 water and dust resistance rating along with a squeezable frame (like in HTC U11) to trigger Google Assistant. The remaining hardware specifications include Snapdragon 835 coupled with 4 gigs of RAM.

Pixel XL 2 Specifications

Pixel 2's elder sibling the XL 2 will feature the exact hardware specifications as the Pixel 2 with differences in screen size, resolution, battery capacity and screen to body ratio. The Pixel 2 XL will have a mammoth 6-inch QHD+ screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio. Android Authority claims that the battery capacity on the Pixel 2 XL will be 3520mAh which if true is only a minor increment from last year's 5.5-inch Pixel XL which had 3450mAh battery.

Evan Blass, better known as evleaks, yesterday leaked an image showcasing an encased Pixel XL 2. Right off the bat, you can make out that the placement of the Google search bar has been moved from its usual place at the top to bottom. The search bar at the top has been replaced by a reminder widget which supposedly will pull out events from your calendar and Keep. Other minute details which can be made out from the render are the time - 8:00. We know that the Pixel 2 devices will be launched with Oreo onboard. The only thing which remains to be seen is the Android version they will be having. If Google goes as per last year, the Pixel 2 smartphones will have something other than Oreo 8.0 (maybe 8.1). If it happens to be 8.1, then there may be features (I'm guessing Google Lens) which are exclusive to the Pixel 2 devices for sometime and would then be extended to other devices somewhere in the future. For example, Google Assistant was exclusive to the Pixel devices when they were launched last year, but gradually Google rolled out Assistant to other devices.

According to Droid-Life, the Pixel/XL 2 will both be available in two storage models - 64GB and 128GB - without support for SD cards, The pricing will vary as per the model and storage capacity.

  • Pixel 2 (64GB) - $649
  • Pixel 2 (128GB) - $749
  • Pixel XL 2 (64GB) - $849
  • Pixel XL 2 (128GB) - $949
