Google Assistant is coming to JioPhone

Earlier this year, Reliance Jio took the feature phone market by storm by launching the JioPhone. The handset came with all basic features like web browser, support for video steaming on YouTube web and JioCinema app. It was powered by Qualcomm's 205 Mobile platform and even had its own voice assistant.

However, now Google at its Google for India event has announced a special version of Google Assistant for the JioPhone. As a reminder, Google Assistant is currently supported on device running Android and iOS. But JioPhone is the first non-Android device to support Assistant.

The special version of Google Assistant designed for JioPhone will support English and Hindi languages. It will be available for the JioPhone starting today and will enable users to give voice commands to ask Assistant to navigate and search the web, make phone calls, text, play music and videos, access other apps and services, and more.

Google in a blog post said “This will help bring the benefits of the Google Assistant to millions of first time internet users on the JioPhone with an intuitive voice-based user interface, along with a rich set of data services.”
