Google Announces Suggested Actions & Color Pop For Photos, Rolling Out Today

At Google I/O today, CEO Sundar Pichai announced a bunch of new features which will be making their way to Photos later today. Firstly, we have Suggested Actions. Photos will use machine learning algorithms to suggest actions that can be performed on a picture or group of pictures.

All of us have those nagging friends and relatives who keep asking to send over those photographs featuring them. Google Photos will help you deal with such people by automatically selecting the images having your friend (or relative) and sending those images to them.

Suggested Actions will also give you options to brighten a dark image, rotate an image and archive it. It's worth noting here that since these actions are powered by machine learning, actions would be suggested only on relevant images.

At the keynote, Sundar Pichai also showed a feature where Photos will detect document pictures, crop and rotate them to contain only the relevant content, and then convert the pictures to PDF.

Secondly, we have Color Pop. This feature will make the subject stand out by turning the background to black and white. As shown in the image above, not only the subject, but whatever the subject is holding (in this case flowers) will also pop out. Google says that they are working on a feature where Photos will automatically color black and white images. Color Pop will be available via the Assistant tab of Photos.

The features of coloring black and white images, and converting document pictures to PDF will be rolling out in the coming months. The rest of the stated features will be available starting today. It is unclear whether these features would be made available via a server-side update or an update through the Play Store. We will be keeping an eye out, and will let you know how the features are rolled out. If it does turn out to be a server-side update, you must ensure that you are running the latest version of Photos.

In addition to the aforementioned new features, Pichai stated that over five billion images are viewed in Photos every day.
