Motorola Releases A List Of 7 Phones That Will Get Android Pie

Last week, HTC listed which of its smartphones will be getting Android Pie. Now, Motorola has published a list of seven phones that will be updated to the latest version of Android.

The following Motorola phones will be receiving Android 9 starting this fall:

• Moto Z3
• Moto Z3 Play
• Moto Z2 Force
• Moto Z2 Play
• Moto X4
• Moto G6
• Moto G6 Play
• Moto G6 Plus

Even though Motorola's user interface is close to stock Android, the company is still as slow as molasses at updating its devices. Android Oreo was released over a year ago, and Motorola's last year budget duo of Moto G5 and G5 Plus still haven't received their promised Oreo update. Motorola recently began to soak test Android 8.1 for the two devices, though.

Given Motorola's slow pace of rolling out Android updates, I expect most of the aforementioned handsets to receive their Pie update next year. In fact, the Moto Z2 Force - Motorola's 2017 flagship - got Oreo in February, six months after Google released Oreo. However, all the Motorola smartphones listed above support Project Treble. This means that the Pie update should come sooner to these
devices. 

Project Treble makes it easier for manufacturers to update their devices. I was, therefore, expecting Motorola to update the Moto E5 phones to Android Pie. Unfortunately, no phone from the Moto E5 lineup has been included in the list. It's worth noting here that both the Moto G6- and E5-series phones were launched just four months ago. I hope Motorola improves itself in the future, but for the time being, the company has to deliver Android Oreo to the Moto G5/G5 Plus and the Moto G4/G4 Plus.
